Accessibility guidelines and legislation are a great way to ensure that our communities are accessible for everyone, but it's also important to remember that not all communities approach disability in the same way. A recent report by the First Nations National Building Officers Association (FNNBOA) found that some Indigenous communities may have definitions of disability and barriers that differ from the definitions in the Accessible Canada Act. For example, Indigenous people with disabilities may not see or report barriers that others may find to be a challenge. Indigenous cultures may value interdependence differently than Canadians living off reserve. Applying the Accessible Canada Act broadly across Indigenous communities without understanding the community's specific needs can lead to issues and disagreements. The takeaway: Sometimes, the most inclusive thing we can do is to ask people what they need and meet them where they are. Don't be afraid to have a conversation and get a better understanding before making decisions.

🌟 estara Grant for Increased Wheelchair Beach Access 🌟 South Australian Minister for Human Services Nat Cook this morning announced estara as a 2024-25 Social Impact Grants recipient. The grant will be used to purchase a Mobichair floating wheelchair and waterproof communicators to the value of over $9,000. This equipment will significantly improve the quality of life for our clients, as well as members of the general public, and allow them to access the water during our Accessible Beach Days over Summer. People with disabilities face major barriers to participation in everyday life. Without access to affordable, appropriate #AssistiveTechnology (AT), those barriers can all but eliminate opportunities for education, employment, and human connection, locking people with disabilities into cycles of poverty and isolation. We spoke to Israel Kine, a person who without their white cane is unable to move through the world independently. Replacing a broken cane is difficult in Papua New Guinea where AT is often scarce or unaffordable. For many, access to AT enables freedom and meaningful participation in their community.
