Age Friendly public space means that older people are actively involved in social, economic and cultural life. This creates better local environment for everybody’s benefit. Age Friendly Towns respond to what members of the community need as they age. The design and maintenance of a community’s built environment and public realm can make the difference between a healthy and active lifestyle, or one characterised by limited mobility and high levels of social isolation. When the environment is attractive and accessible, people of all ages can be supported to enjoy more active and connected lives. Age Friendly Ireland developed a toolkit that communities, towns and neighbourhoods can use that will support making your area or town more age friendly. The toolkit provides the processes, practices and tools developed as part of the Age Friendly Towns Programme in Ireland. Accessibility guidelines and legislation are a great way to ensure that our communities are accessible for everyone, but it's also important to remember that not all communities approach disability in the same way. A recent report by the First Nations National Building Officers Association (FNNBOA) found that some Indigenous communities may have definitions of disability and barriers that differ from the definitions in the Accessible Canada Act. For example, Indigenous people with disabilities may not see or report barriers that others may find to be a challenge. Indigenous cultures may value interdependence differently than Canadians living off reserve. Applying the Accessible Canada Act broadly across Indigenous communities without understanding the community's specific needs can lead to issues and disagreements. The takeaway: Sometimes, the most inclusive thing we can do is to ask people what they need and meet them where they are. Don't be afraid to have a conversation and get a better understanding before making decisions.

Age is just a number, but this one deserves our attention! Nearly 50% of the global population aged over 60 has a disability! As our population ages, as you age….the need for accessible and inclusive environments becomes even more crucial. It's not just about ramps and lifts; it's about creating a world where everyone, regardless of age or ability, can participate fully. @ASI_Index we are committed to more inclusive communities for all including our seniors. People with disabilities face major barriers to participation in everyday life. Without access to affordable, appropriate #AssistiveTechnology (AT), those barriers can all but eliminate opportunities for education, employment, and human connection, locking people with disabilities into cycles of poverty and isolation. We spoke to Israel Kine, a person who without their white cane is unable to move through the world independently. Replacing a broken cane is difficult in Papua New Guinea where AT is often scarce or unaffordable. For many, access to AT enables freedom and meaningful participation in their community. We must do more to ensure everyone, everywhere, has the AT they need—when they need it. Let’s work together to #UnlockTheEveryday and break down these barriers.
