Reflecting on Juneteenth: A Call to Learn, Act, and Unite 🌟📘 Today, as we mark Juneteenth, we're reminded of its profound significance in American history. Juneteenth isn't just about commemorating the end of slavery—it's about understanding the ongoing struggle for racial justice and the importance of cultural heritage. This day is pivotal as it highlights the delayed freedom of enslaved people in Texas despite the Emancipation Proclamation being enacted years earlier. It serves as a crucial lesson in the persistence of injustice and the resilience required to overcome it. As leaders and changemakers, we're tasked with the responsibility to foster an environment of inclusivity and understanding in every sphere we influence. As a coach committed to leadership development and organizational change, I view Juneteenth as a critical moment for reflection and action. It's an opportunity to reassess our roles in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within our teams and communities. Today, let’s commit to not only educating ourselves but also to implementing practices that uphold these values every day. How are you observing this significant day in your professional and personal life? Let’s discuss actionable steps we can take to honor this day and make a lasting impact. Your thoughts and insights are invaluable as we continue this journey together. #Juneteenth #LeadershipForChange #DiversityAndInclusion #ReflectActUnite

Darren Walker, Ford Foundation president: “There has never been a more difficult time to lead anything — whether a publicly traded corporation or a nonprofit nongovernmental organization; whether a global university or a local, public school or classroom. Indeed, many of the best would-be leaders are asking, why would I even want to be a leader? Courageous, moral leadership demands more (of leaders). Because it challenges us to recognize that bringing light is often worth enduring the heat, especially in moments of profound challenge for our democracy, our communities and our world. We penalize bold leadership when we should be rewarding it. Inequalities of all kinds have eroded the very foundation of our American community — because inequality has created the conditions in which the American people are both desperate for leadership and programmed for corrosive cynicism about seemingly anyone who offers it.” #leadership #strategy #innovation #culture #community #growth #society #democracy #equality #inequality #risk #change

As we enter the second month of the year, it's time to reassess our goals and strategies. As a lawyer and advocate for children, I believe that creating positive impact is key to making a meaningful difference. Instead of competing with others, let's focus on being a better version of ourselves. Here are three key takeaways to help you achieve your goals: Set realistic goals: Break down large goals into smaller, achievable milestones. Focus on progress: Celebrate your wins, no matter how small they may seem. Be a force for good: Use your skills and expertise to create positive impact in your community. Let's work together to make this year count! #SDGs #Leadership #PositiveImpact #ProfessionalDevelopment African Union

It's Juneteenth, a day to reflect on the importance of cultural competency in organizations. Are you part of a workplace that values and respects this holiday? Sharing a personal experience, I once encountered a situation where I was asked to consult (White) senior leadership on Black History Month decorations. The irony of seeking guidance from a senior marketing leader who was unaware highlighted the need for inclusive practices. How can we foster more inclusive practices in organizations where cultural competency is currently low? #Juneteenth #CulturalCompetency #DiversityandInclusion

Let’s talk about it: White fragility. When conversations about race get uncomfortable, white educators often shut down or become defensive. But that discomfort is where the growth happens. If we’re going to make real progress in anti-racism work, we cannot let white fragility be a barrier. The truth is, dismantling racism is uncomfortable—but it’s necessary. Instead of seeing this as an attack, lean into the discomfort. It’s in that space that we make room for Black and Brown students to thrive. ✊🏾 Let’s move past the fear and step into real change. If your school would benefit from support with developing leaders to create anti-racist school environments for staff and students, click here to schedule a 15-min call with me to see how I can support your school. bit.ly/WBGLdiscoverycall #schoolleaders #edleadership #whenbrowngirlslead

"Aang Lakey (they/them) is a passionate advocate for equity in leadership, dedicated to empowering individuals and organizations to create inclusive environments. As the Founder and CEO of Increasing Consciousness, Aang focuses on fostering consciousness and reflexivity in leadership practices to address systemic inequities. Aang’s journey into this work was shaped by a deep personal history, having grown up in severe poverty with parents who struggled with substance abuse and homelessness. A pivotal experience at age 12, during a conflict over racism between their aunt and father, sparked Aang’s awareness of societal inequities and began their lifelong path of questioning deeply ingrained beliefs. Aang’s academic background includes a Master of Social Work (MSW), where they delved deeply into the complexities of bias, violence prevention, and social justice, particularly in military contexts. This foundation, combined with their own life experiences, provided Aang with a unique understanding of leadership’s intersection with social equity, emotional intelligence, and mindfulness. Their personal mission evolved into promoting equity and fostering inclusive environments by recognizing the distinct needs of individuals from diverse backgrounds."
