Honoured to participated along with six other agricultural and food economics journal editors in a #ICAE2024 panel on the future of publishing in agricultural economics. Major themes were further improving the diversity of representation in journals, both by gender and by country; ensuring strong ethical foundations; and improving the communication of research findings. In my own remarks I emphasised that our discipline is a "big tent" in terms of topic coverage, which extends to the most fundamental challenges facing the humanity: food security, nutrition, farmers' livelihoods, resource use, the environment and climate change. On the other hand, it is relatively focused, bringing the critical perspective of economics to these issues. We cannot find solutions without understanding how people respond to incentives, and without confronting the reality of difficult trade-offs across competing objectives. Unfortunately I see a big disconnect between insightful research at the academic "sharp end" and its uptake by policymakers. We can and must do a better job at narrowing that gap -- if not it will be filled by those proposing simplistic solutions that ignore the economic dimensions, are based on flimsy evidence, or reflect narrow political agendas. Most of the journals are -- like the JAE -- the organs of our professional societies. I believe that identity is an valuable asset for improving the impact of our research, so that new and robust insights work their way into the policy process. Thanks to my fellow panellists Sangeeta Bansal (Agricultural Economics); Jill McCluskey (American Journal of Agricultural Economic); Holly WANG (Food Policy); Jacob Ricker-Gilbert (Agricultural Economics); Paolo Sckokai (European Review of Agricultural Economics and Gopi Munisamy (Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy).

I’m excited to share the article by Dr. Richard Barichello, Dr. James Vercammen, and myself, "Are Milk Quota Prices a Rational Investment? Modeling Quotas as Financial Assets," recently published in the Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics (CJAE). I contributed to the data preparation, model regressions, and post-estimation analysis for this paper. Our research delves into the intriguing rise of farm-level milk quota prices in Alberta from 2009 to 2023. We examine whether these price trends are economically rational by creating and testing a model based on a well-established financial framework and incorporating key characteristics of the milk quota market. We also examine the impact of policy risk, offering insight into how government policy changes could affect market values.

Insightful Experience at the #AESConference I have just returned from the Agricultural Economics Society's Annual #AESConference, and it was an enriching experience. The conference provided an excellent platform for researchers, professionals, and students to share their work and engage in thought-provoking discussions on various aspects of #agriculturaleconomics. The program featured a diverse range of topics, including #agriculturaltrade, #environmentaleconomics, #supplychain, #foodpolicy, #behavioraleconomics, #agriculturaladaptation, #climatechange, #livestockproduction, #agriculturaldevelopment, #technologyadoption, and the economics of #bioenergy. I had the opportunity to attend several stimulating presentations that showcased cutting-edge research and innovative approaches to addressing challenges in the #agriculturalsector. The discussions that followed were insightful and fostered a constructive exchange of ideas among attendees from different backgrounds and perspectives. Overall, the #AESConference was a fantastic #networking opportunity, allowing me to connect with #scholars, establish new #collaborations, and gain exposure to the latest developments in agricultural economics. I left feeling inspired and motivated to contribute further to this vital field. #UNITUS #AgriculturalEconomicsSociety #ConferenceHighlights
