The Lowitja Institute has released the 2024 Close The Gap Report: Voyage to Voice, Treaty, Truth and Beyond. FACEM, Co-chair Indigenous Health Committee, Director of the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association and ACEM Board Member Glen Harrison (Wotjoboluk) said "The most recent update of Close The Gap, highlights the breadth, depth and scope of work still needed to progress the outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and our communities. While the results are disappointing, there is optimism in a better future for our community which will benefit all Australians. Health services, including emergency departments, will need to be proactive and look to audit, measure and improve on key KPIs and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients through resources, including Reconciliation Action Plans and working collaboratively with our Indigenous communities." FACEM and Reconciliation Action Plan Steering Group co-chair Liz Mowatt said, "ACEM members all have a role to play in Closing the Gap by working to eliminate racism in healthcare. Get started by using your Cultural Safety CPD activity in 2024 to make your ED more culturally safe for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Alternatively, you could invest in developing the tools to call out racism." Read the report here: https://ace.mn/19cef3 #ClosetheGapReport2024

💻 Webinar: A Spotlight on Asian American Renters August 22 at 12 p.m. PT / 3 p.m. ET National CAPACD recently published a series of policy briefs that illustrate the impact of the rental crisis on our communities and the need for further action to protect renters. These four briefs share findings from interviews with staff from 18 community-based organizations from across the country and disaggregated national data. They focus on the needs and experiences of Asian American renters in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, outlining policy recommendations that respond to these experiences. These briefs specifically focus on Asian American communities because we intend to partner with our NHPI-serving members on a future research effort that addresses the significant and unique housing needs of NHPI communities. On August 22, join us for a webinar to learn more about these policy briefs, the stories of our members who are organizing to protect low-income Asian American renters, and how National CAPACD plans to use these briefs in our policy and narrative change work. You will also have the opportunity to share how you envision using these briefs in your local advocacy efforts. Register now ➡️ https://ow.ly/mQc950SUhwb #OurNeighborhoods #HousingEquity #AARenters

Did you know San Diego County is home to the 7th largest Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community in the country? 🌏 Our new State of San Diego Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians & Pacific Islanders Report, developed in partnership with the San Diego Regional Policy & Innovation Center, highlights significant disparities within this diverse population. Making up 16.2% of San Diego County’s total population, the AANHPI community is among the largest and most diverse in the U.S. However, these individuals are often treated as a monolith or a group of people who are thought to be the same, which masks the gaps that exist across different AANHPI subgroups. ➡️ Read the full report at https://lnkd.in/gsGvfHg3. #AANHPI #DiversityAndInclusion #RepresentationMatters

Key lesson from my indigenous course: ⬇ 🙏 "The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action (2015) highlight the need to reduce health inequities experienced by Indigenous peoples, to value and provide access to Indigenous healing approaches, and to ensure health care providers are trained in “intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, and anti-racism”

On this day in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is a foundational framework affirming the inherent dignity and equal rights of every individual, regardless of background, as essential for freedom, justice, and peace in the world. Working in healthcare, I see its principles as a call to action to address all determinants of health—ensuring equitable access to healthcare, education, safety, and opportunity as vital elements of building healthier communities. A future with healthy people and healthy communities across the Canadian Maritimes requires us to take an integrated look at social services and other factors affecting health outcomes, especially for children. Right now, too many children and youth in Nova Scotia alone are failing to attain optimal physical health due in large part to structural and social barriers. We can enhance the overall health of our communities now and into the future if we look to partners with lived experience who are making a difference today and if we continue to gather data and input from those we serve so we can anticipate the needs of tomorrow. #HumanRights #HealthyCommunities #Partners #Children

On Closing the Gap Day, we join with all signatories to the National Agreement, to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities in improving their lives. From birth, to education and health, life expectancy and housing, the outcomes for Indigenous Australians are still not equal to those enjoyed by other Australians. There are important conversations to be had, around policies and systems that consciously build on the four priorities that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have identified, as what is important to ensure a pathway for equitable expectations of health and wellbeing. Link Wentworth is committed to working and walking together with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, to build better outcomes and an equitable future. 💫 We believe digital technologies and education are part of the solution to improve the quality of life for women through perimenopause and menopause. ☘ In collaboration with Metluma and Western Sydney University, we have conducted the first Australian study to develop an intervention to support menopausal women at work. 📥 We are pleased to see preliminary findings from this research project presented in Metluma’s submission to the Senate Inquiry. 🧠 Congested care pathways and health workforce pressures support a new integrated and tech-enabled model of care that empowers perimenopausal and menopausal women at scale by raising awareness, improving access to support, increasing health literacy, and encouraging behaviour change. ℹ For more information, read the full submission (number 56): https://lnkd.in/edGWa_gF Georgie Drury Dr Nicole Avard Jane Ussher Tania Perich #DigitalHealth #Menopause #SenateInquiry #Perimenopause #Support #WomenatWork

The recent #AustralianStory program involving Labor Senator Fatima Payman highlights a deep seated problem that Australia needs to deal with ... inclusion does not simply mean tokenistic representation. To truly consult you need to listen, and respond to, dissenting views. Not just simply silence or ignore them. We see it in almost every facet of policy, the "perception" of consultation and inclusion. What a former Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care senior executive used to refer to as "representative swill". Senator Payman summed it up really well ... "you want me to look like me but think like you". Sadly, this is not a Labor problem. It's an Australia problem. That's not inclusion. #inclusion #representation #consultation #debate

It was an honor and a privilege to lead the research in the State of San Diego Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians & Pacific Islanders Report in partnership with San Diego Foundation. This report provides critical insights into the unique challenges faced by different AANHPI communities and calls attention to the need for data disaggregation and more nuanced approaches to equity and inclusion. I look forward to seeing how it sparks meaningful conversations, drives actionable data-driven solutions, and creates lasting positive change for the AANHPI community in San Diego.
