Our friends at Wimbart have just released the second edition of their report, “Startup Performance Reporting in Africa: Aligning Startup and Investor Expectations.” We're proud to have partnered with them to bring this to life! The report, which aims to provide a deeper understanding of investor-startup reporting dynamics on the continent, has revealed that misaligned reporting in African tech could risk future funding. 💡 Some of the key insights found: - 72% of investors have raised their reporting demands in the last 18 months, placing more emphasis on sustainability metrics over financial KPIs. - 89% of investors now receive regular reports from their portfolio companies, up from 71% in 2023 - 40% of startup founders believe that investors don’t fully understand their business or market, leading to a communication gap. We launched our second Wimbart Start Up Investor Comms Report yesterday, and it was a pleasure speaking with CNBC Africa's David Alabi on the report findings, as well as the wider macroeconomic climate for Africa's tech space, and also the upcoming mega tech event Moonshot by TechCabal The report's results were very interesting 📢 There's been an almost 20% increase in investors recording regular updates from their portfolio companies 📢 72% of investors have increased their reporting requirements over the past 18 months, prioritising sustainability metrics over financial KPIs However... 📢 42% of founders believe their investors have a good enough understanding of their business and market to value their reports 📢 12% of founders stated that “confidentiality concerns” were one of the most significant barriers to sharing investor updates. The "why" of reporting is not an issue... but the "how" continues to be problematic for the sector. 🌍 Exciting Times for Irish Tech! 🇮🇪 Irish tech start-ups raised a whopping €400 million in the April to June period of 2024, marking the best quarterly performance since mid-2022. This is a significant leap from the €169 million secured in the first quarter, showing that the innovation scene in Ireland is not just thriving but accelerating at an impressive pace. Dublin continues to be the epicenter, accounting for 67% of the total funding. With enterprise software, healthcare, and fintech leading the way, it's clear that Ireland's tech ecosystem is on the rise. 💡 Cautious Optimism for Future Growth 💡 While overall investment is up, the local funding environment remains challenging, particularly for late seed and Series A rounds. Yet, there’s a silver lining: Series B and growth rounds hit record highs, with notable deals like SyOx Therapeutics (€70.3 million) and Accounts IQ (€60 million) propelling the sector forward. This momentum reflects a strong belief in the potential of Irish tech companies to compete on the global stage. A huge shout-out to Caleb Maru for putting together such a fantastic event for Tech Safari last week. Zinhle Phakathi, (MPhil) Cheri Blair Alumni hosted a discussion between Wiza Jalakasi and Ronald Makomba about doubling down on South Africa. My takeaway? 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 As entrepreneurs and founders in South Africa, we often underestimate the power of sharing our journeys. Stories are what connect us, inspire us, and move the needle forward. There’s a tendency to play small, but we owe it to ourselves—and our ideas—to step up, show up, and take up space in meaningful ways. Also, the pot truly is big enough for everyone. This is embedded in our own business's culture, and it was great to hear it echoed on the stage. To me this really means that collaboration is key. If we don’t all have a scarcity mindset, we are able to have stronger partnerships, which lead to stronger ideas, better outcomes, and a thriving ecosystem for all.

The Philippine tech ecosystem is at an inflection point, brimming with opportunities yet facing critical challenges. Carlo Chen-Delantar discussed some of his key insights on #ANCMarketEdge with Michelle Krystle Ong: 🌐 There has been a gap in the volume of regional investors coming into the Philippines and the number of local investors available. The increased presence of regional investors in the Philippines proves the growing potential of the startups in the ecosystem. However, there are opportunities for local investors to invest back into the Philippines. 🌐 In 2024, majority of the tech ecosystem funding was funneled into growth stage funding, especially in #fintech. However, the limited number of startups progressing to Series A-B highlights the need to strengthen both growth strategies and market dynamics. By fostering the right conditions, we can encourage more groundbreaking innovations to emerge. 🌐 In order for technology to be used as a nation-building tool, there needs to be an influx of support coming from all stakeholders -- government, investors, startups, ecosystem enablers, TBI consortia, and others. Startup-friendly policies, such as tax incentives and streamlined visas, are essential to addressing these gaps. They enable startups to reinvest in growth, attract global talent, and encourage both local and foreign investors to participate. The time to invest, build, and act towards growing the Philippine ecosystem to compete with ASEAN countries is now.
