AI Institute for Next Generation Food Systems (AIFS)’s Post

AIFS was pleased to be invited to speak at the Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Sustainable Agriculture Workshop for #growers this week in Salinas, CA. Moderated by Michael Cahn and Paramveer Singh with UCANR Cooperative Extension (UCCE), their first-ever workshop on this topic provided an opportunity for growers and other Salinas Valley #agtech industry representatives to learn about current and future AI-driven technologies that address sustainable agricultural practices. AIFS Associate Director Steve Brown spoke about AIFS’ work to identify impact areas to benefit #resiliency and #sustainability. Other speakers included Dennis Donohue from the Western Growers, Jason Mellow with Axis Ag, Inc. (ag data, grower, and company integration), Elliot Dorenbaum, the UAS manager with Wilbur Ellis (current and future drone applications), Frank Martin with US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) (drones for strawberry disease management), Raj Khosla from Kansas State University (precision nitrogen management), and Elia Scudiero from University of California, Riverside (better soil maps for nutrient management).

For some context on the Salinas Valley, it's America's Salad Bowl for a reason. Lettuce, spinach, strawberries, and artichokes are among the many crops that contribute to this nickname. It was great to learn from growers directly about the math involved in growing and producing these crops for consumption by us all.
