In times when some technologies become fashionable, it is important to reflect on the meaning of our teaching role in the classroom and of the activities we propose to students, whether or not they include GenAI. It’s going to be an uphill battle!! I recently shared a hard truth: "Human learning is difficult to change." Right now, I'm seeing that play out in real-time. We've adopted three classrooms with teachers eager to explore AI's potential. But as the reality of day-to-day teaching takes hold, many revert to old patterns—because, let’s face it, habits are hard to break. Meanwhile, outside the classroom, there's plenty of noise. People are waving their hands, excited about AI generating exit tickets, lesson plans, and emails. But here’s the thing: teachers already know how to do that. That's not the challenge. Getting AI to support deeper, more meaningful classroom work is the real challenge. During a walk around one of my campuses, I did an informal AI survey. Several teachers shared how AI helps them save time with the details. But the burning question is, what’s next? Where do we go from here? I also hugged a teacher in the hallway, already overwhelmed at 10:30 in the morning by a student’s behavior. These everyday challenges are real, and teachers want to know, "What else can AI do?" Can it help with classroom management? Can it address the human elements that make or break the learning environment? These are the questions we should be asking. AI isn't just about automating tasks we already know. It’s about pushing boundaries—figuring out what AI can do that we haven’t even imagined yet. That's why we created Agnes, our AI toolbox built on the belief that educational AI shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all. We didn’t want to constrain teachers with pre-made prompts or canned solutions. We want to see where their creativity can take AI, not the other way around. After all, if all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail. We want to give our teachers more than a hammer. The world our students are entering is going to be shaped by AI. The question is: How do we prepare them for it? It’s an uphill battle, but the possibilities are endless. 💡 Generative AI in Schools: A Growing Paradox? Did you know that every second school teacher in Germany has used generative AI, yet only 16% feel confident in their skills? Meanwhile, 89% of children are already using it in various contexts, even though almost 40% of teachers forbid its use for homework. (Sources: vbw, Bitkom) To bridge this gap, the THI Future Lab program fosters knowledge transfer from research and university teaching to schools. This week, I had the pleasure of hosting an interactive workshop with 60 students (and 40 more to come!) from the Apian Gymnasium in Ingolstadt, joined by three dedicated teachers. Together, we explored how to use generative AI to get on the next level with co-operative use of AI in learning and teaching: 📝 Analyzing texts and poems 📚 Creating interactive learning stories 🧠 Generating AI-driven mind maps 🎓 Developing seminar paper topics …and much more. The enthusiasm from students and teachers alike highlights how much potential programs like this have to drive meaningful #impact. These initiatives are not only highly demanded but essential for shaping the future of education. Yes.. change is hard but change is necessary. The educational environment, leadership, and infrastructure must be accepting of the change. Using Ai as a creative thought partner for designing creative authentic learning experiences and then creating chatbots to serve a tool to personalize learning for the individual student and then synthesizing information into new and novel ways is where the innovation in education will occur. It’s not easy but we have to keep pushing. What are the creative constants and design elements that you can use to harness the power of Ai? This is a question that I ask myself in the daily.

My biggest hopes for AI in the classroom aren’t being able to do “new” things, but rather helping teachers do the things we’ve known for so long are invaluable (but incredibly difficult to implement) like authentic project-based learning. I love the prompt in this article: how can AI help teachers and faculty move away “from the ‘what’ pedagogy of the industrial era — students passively ingesting a heavily curated body of information for later regurgitation — to a ‘why’ paradigm that turns students into builders of new knowledge through #creative problem solving.” The Chronicle of Higher Education:  https://lnkd.in/gjMN_x4D #AILiteracy

Another day, another excellent AI-centric workshop experience! Recently, I had the opportunity to present an AI Foundations I virtual workshop to the dedicated educators at Ocean State Academy. The conversation was lively, the "a-ha moments" frequent. Excited to re-share my keynote from SITE 2024, "Teacher Knowledge in an Age of Gen AI."  It was an honor to be invited back to keynote at SITE in Vegas - something I had last done 16 years ago. I tried to pack in a lot into 45 minutes - attempting to capture my current thinning about genAI but also contextualizing it within a longer story of the evolution of my thinking as an educator and educational researcher. One key theme was exploring how AI is revolutionizing our approach to creativity and innovation. One of the highlights was demonstrating AI’s ability to compose a poem about Euclid’s proof of the infinity of primes. By intentionally inserting an error, I showcased how AI not only understands complex mathematical concepts but also mirrors human-like thought processes. This example is just the tip of the iceberg. Generative AI can simulate student misconceptions, create software without any coding knowledge, and produce realistic images—all within moments. The potential applications in education and creativity are boundless. However, the keynote also emphasized the importance of being aware of AI's limitations and biases. While AI can enhance learning and innovation, it can also perpetuate stereotypes and biases if not used responsibly.
