I recently wrote an article outlining a four-step framework for determining whether AI represents an opportunity, threat, or both for your organisation. In Step 2, I describe some of AI technologies' common capabilities. Today, I listened to the recent Lex Friedman Podcast with Yan LeCun (episode #416), in which Yan made the following insightful points regarding the current capabilities of Generative AI (what he calls autoregressive LLMs), and their limitations:  1) Autoregressive LLMs are not the way we’re going to make progress towards superhuman intelligence. 2) The capacity to understand the world, understand the physical world, the ability to remember and retrieve things, persistent memory, the ability to reason, and the ability to plan... those are four essential characteristics of intelligent systems or entities, humans, animals. 3) LLMs can do none of those, or they can only do them in a very primitive way, and they don’t really understand the physical world.   4) They don’t really have persistent memory. They can’t really reason, and they certainly can’t plan. Yan also discussed Moravec's paradox, which may be useful if you need to change preconceptions as to where the challenges lie. This episode also covered topics such as how we as humans conduct hierarchical planning and reasoning and the need to develop better world models.

Or, as he puts it, “I know what hype is.” While the conversation about AI can swing between excitement about its seemingly endless capabilities and concerns about sweeping job losses or, in some circles, the potential end of the world, Sidorkin, Sacramento State’s chief AI officer, takes a more measured approach. As head of Sac State’s National Institute on AI in Society, Sidorkin speaks frequently in the community about the technology and also hears concerns from faculty about the potential for student cheating. Sidorkin tells “Beyond J” that, yes, some jobs will disappear, but not nearly as many as people think. Yes, AI can write a five-paragraph essay, but it’s not capable of human creativity or agency.
