Through the power of collective action, Lake Farms, a fish farming cooperative in Zambia, is revolutionizing the local aquaculture industry. This innovative enterprise not only cultivates and processes fresh fish but also empowers women in the community by providing them with a reliable source of income through fish sales. By championing cooperatives like Lake Farms, TechnoServe and USAID are driving sustainable aquaculture, fostering food security, and creating shared value for rural communities. This collaborative effort is paving the way for a more resilient and equitable future in Zambia's aquaculture sector. With the support of USAID and TechnoServe's Alliance for Inclusive and Nutritious Food Processing - AINFP program, Lake Farms has undergone a remarkable transformation, enhancing its fish farming practices, improving processing and storage facilities, and strengthening market linkages. This strategic partnership is a testament to the impact of investing in cooperatives and promoting inclusive economic growth. The INNOECOFOOD Project officially launched 👏 in Kenya! Farmers in Siaya County, Kenya encouraged to do fish farming, adopting the Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS) for catfish and tilapia which will be done in Ecohubs. The project will enhance the production and processing of alternative proteins: edible insects such as black soldier flies, crickets and blue-green cyanobacteria spirulina that will be value-added for human consumption and fish feeds. Our commitment is to help fish farming communities and consumers fully understand the health and economic benefits of this initiative, increase awareness, which will enhance the exploitation of technology for learning innovative production, processing and market linkages. We aim to achieve a lasting impact that will guarantee: 🍽 Food and nutrition security 🌊 Environmental Sustainability 💹 Socio-economic Empowerment Source: KTN News #PartnersAgainstHunger #INNOECOFOOD #SustainableAquaculture

Post #1: 🌍 Unlocking Africa’s Aquaculture Potential: Why We Should Farm More Fish 🐟 Africa is poised to become a global leader in aquaculture, and here’s why we should dive in: 1. Growing Demand: With the world population expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, global fish consumption is projected to rise by 40%. Africa can meet this demand by scaling up its fish farming industry. 2. Food Security: Fish is a crucial source of protein. In Africa, where over 250 million people suffer from malnutrition, expanding aquaculture can provide a sustainable and nutritious food source, helping to combat food insecurity. 3. Economic Impact: Aquaculture has the potential to generate over $50 billion annually for Africa’s economies. By investing in fish farming, we can create millions of jobs (mainly for the youth) and foster economic development in rural areas. 4. Environmental Benefits: Responsible aquaculture can be a sustainable source of aquatic foods, with a lower carbon footprint than traditional animal husbandry and reduced pressure on wild fish stocks. By supporting and investing in aquaculture, we’re not only enhancing food security and boosting economies but also paving the way for a more sustainable future. Let’s harness Africa’s potential and make a splash in the global fish farming industry! #Aquaculture #SustainableFarming #FoodSecurity #EconomicGrowth #Africa #Innovation #fish #fishfarming

Africa faces severe malnutrition, with over 282 million undernourished and 40% of children stunted. Fish, which provide 17% of global animal protein and essential nutrients like omega-3s, can help address these gaps. Currently, fish consumption in Sub-Saharan Africa is just 9.9 kg per person annually, well below the global average of 20.5 kg. Expanding fish farming could provide a sustainable, nutrient-rich food source to improve nutrition as the

A recent study by researchers at the University of Stirling has shed light on the significant benefits that small-scale aquaculture can bring to rural African communities, particularly in Zambia. Through extensive research, it was found that integrating fish farming into agricultural practices not only diversifies livelihoods but also plays a crucial role in increasing food security and improving the nutritional status of populations. The adoption of aquaculture has proven to be a game changer for local farmers, allowing them not only to diversify their sources of income but also to significantly enrich the variety of their diet. This transformation represents a remarkable advance in the way rural communities can secure their livelihoods, moving beyond income generation to create a more resilient and sustainable agricultural system. #bluetransformation #blueeconomy #aquaculture #africa

Smallholder turmeric farmers are faced with grueling farming activities, laborious processing, declining sale prices, and a persistent shortage of working capital for most of the year. Additionally, they lack modern agricultural skills and have insufficient access to inputs. To address these issues, Precise, in collaboration with USAID, is initiating a project to pilot a Subscription Farming Model in the Sheko and Gimbo woredas of southwestern Ethiopia. This initiative aims to strengthen the turmeric value chain by fostering sustainable business relationships among turmeric farmers, local processors, cooperatives, and a multinational buyer. Our key objectives are simplifying the cultivation and processing of turmeric to increase efficiency, introducing a multinational company as a buyer to ensure consistent demand for turmeric, providing various training programs to enhance farmers' skills and knowledge, and introducing new technologies in turmeric processing to improve productivity. #farming #smallholder #livelihoods #sdgs #agriculture

# **Unlocking Opportunities in Kenya’s Aquaculture Sector** Kenya’s aquaculture sector has grown remarkably over the last decade, becoming a key driver of food security and economic development. This growth has created diverse opportunities, spurring innovation and building a thriving ecosystem for businesses and stakeholders. From hatchery services to distribution networks and value-added products, the sector offers immense possibilities. However, gaps in areas like diagnostics remain, highlighting the need for targeted investments and collaboration. ## **Opportunities in the Sector** The aquaculture value chain has expanded, creating opportunities in: - **Hatchery Services**: Meeting the rising demand for high-quality fingerlings. - **Pond Construction**: Supporting farmers with sustainable systems. - **Logistics**: Importing cages, feeds, and critical supplies. - **Cold Storage**: Maintaining fish quality for markets. - **Marketplaces and Aggregation**: Adding value through gutting, packaging, and more. - **Support Services**: Packaging suppliers, oil companies, and firewood vendors have found niches. - **Air-Fried Fish**: A healthier product for health-conscious consumers. - **Fish Feed Distribution**: A growing need for county-level distributors. ## **Addressing the Gaps** Despite progress, gaps like the lack of **autopsy services** persist. Farmers face significant losses due to disease outbreaks, and diagnostics could help mitigate such risks. Establishing these services, led by aquatic veterinarians, would be a game-changer, enabling proactive interventions to boost productivity. ## **The Way Forward** The future of aquaculture in Kenya depends on innovation and collaboration. Addressing gaps like diagnostics, expanding cold chain infrastructure, and promoting value-added products are crucial. By doing so, the sector can empower farmers, create jobs, and enhance food security. Kenya’s aquaculture sector is a hub of opportunity. Let’s continue building an innovative and sustainable ecosystem for all. --- ### **#Aquaculture #Kenya #FoodSecurity #BlueEconomy #Innovation #FishFarming #AgriBusiness #ValueChainDevelopment #Sustainability**
