His Excellency Akio Isomata, the Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, visited Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) on December 20, 2024. During the visit, he met with Air Chief Marshal Harsha Abeywickrema (Rtd.), Chairman of Airport & Aviation Services Sri Lanka Private Ltd, to discuss airport operations and infrastructural development needs to accommodate increasing passenger demand. Ambassador Isomata inspected the construction site of BIA Terminal 2, emphasizing its strategic importance in alleviating capacity issues. He also reviewed equipment donated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), funded by Japan, including an ambulance valued at approximately USD 100,000 and a digital signage system designed to enhance traveler experience. AASL plans to commence work on Terminal 2 in mid 2025, with completion expected within 30 months. The ambassador reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Sri Lanka.
