Innovative rail + telecom project example in the UK that Canada should look to for PSBN policy - building railway telecom links that also solve the Digital Divide.. This UK rail project is a successful real-world example of a similar shared spectrum model & #investment model that I've been advocating for in Canada - a #collaborative & creative approach to #PSBN Band 14 #spectrum deployment, in partnership with Canadian #rail & #utility #stakeholders in a PSBN. Such a collaborative rail + telecom investment model, similar in broad strokes to this successful real-world UK example, would permit utilities & railways to co-invest new sources of capital funds in PSBN #wireless telecom sites alongside their rail lines for #critical transportation #safety needs & in support of electric #gridcontrol & #greeneconomy system needs. A shared investment model + shared spectrum policy would permit railways in Canada & #electric utilities to co-deploy PSBN #radio sites & spectrum to *solve three problems at once* : 1.) meet railway and utilities' critically important need for highly #Cybersecure & reliable #telecom services for safer rail & electricity grid operation - and; 2.) would also save Canadian #taxpayers $Billions of dollars in costs for a PSBN through rail & utility co-investment, instead of continuing to rely on Canada's failed status quo approach for #ruralbroadband enablement; 3.) a collaborative co-investment model with rail & utilities - who are ready & willing to step in & fund telecom sites where Canada's incumbent carriers have declined to invest - would also help defray Canadian telecom service costs (which are among the very highest in the world.) In the same way that Canada's #railways historically bridged Canada's vast territory with transportation links to our cities & towns with the famous "Golden Spike" moment - they can again be part of bridging & solving Canada's chronic #DigitalDivide telecom problem for rural & First Nations Canadians in a #creative way - through leveraging #coinvestment for critical rail control signaling systems that also require telecom #infrastructure in those rural #communities - building telecom services and #spectrum access alongside #rail & #energy lines. I strongly encourage the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada and Public Safety Canada | Sécurité publique Canada, & the leaders of Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police / Association canadienne des chefs de police and Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs to look to this UK bellwether rail + rural connectivity project. 📣 Great news: The installation of repeaters for mobile signals into the wagons of the Czech Railways, realized by Kontron Transportation s.r.o. and CD-Telematika 🚆 ČD (the Czech Railways) has signed a framework contract for the supply and installation of 5G mobile signal repeaters in all Pendolino and InterPanter units as well as in 6 railjet units. The installation will be provided by a consortium of ČD - Telematika a.s. and Kontron Transportation s.r.o. and will start at the beginning of next year for the railjet units and should be completed by the end of 2025. The entire solution consists of an external broadband antenna supporting the transmission of GPS information, the repeater itself, a GSM-R attenuation filter to ensure smooth operation of the railway signalling system (GSM-R / ETCS) and an internal infrastructure on board the train to ensure signal distribution. "Kontron Transportation's solution is purely European, because of our development facility for our technology in Switzerland. I recently read a LinkedIn post in September regarding the Connected Britain 2024 event at which the Minister for Data Protection and Telecoms, Sir Chris Bryant, gave a speech in which he asked “Why, oh why, can’t we sort connectivity on trains?”. The post went on to analyse the challenge of providing “connectivity on trains” including some suggestions for improving the connectivity. The demand for “connectivity on trains” has been extensively documented and the challenges are regularly re-acknowledged. Various on-train connectivity initiatives have been touted but all are reliant on funding infrastructure to deliver the “off-train connectivity”. This month I read two LinkedIn posts discussing the use of satellite technology to support rail connectivity.     The first was from Clarus Networks announcing the proposed deployment of #Starlink services on Scotland’s Far North Line and the second was from #Digital Dorset discussing the Swanage Railway Co. Ltd’s uses of #DSIT (Department for Science, Innovation and Technology) funding to test how satellite technology can bring 21st century connectivity to even the most challenging rural areas.    This led me to think, perhaps it is time to reconsider the reliance on “terrestrial infrastructure” and instead consider what satellite LEO satellite services such as Starlink or emerging Non-Terrestrial Networks (#NTN) might offer.

The poor access to internet across much of the global fleet has been noted in multiple studies, while as much as 13% of the global merchant fleet has no internet access at all. This fact alone is rather disconcerting.
