As a community foundation, Nikau is not about one single cause. We are about supporting the many diverse and vibrant communities and organisations that make up our region. This allows us flexibility with our grant-making approach, the ability to respond to changing priority areas and to support our communities in meaningful, practical and relevant to the current challenges they are facing. As our communities continue to struggle with the cost-of-living crisis, we placed a focus on providing support to organisations working to alleviate food insecurity through food banks, food rescue and food systems initiatives this year. 🟢 Organisations like Waiwaste, who are supporting communities throughout the Wairarapa by reducing food waste and redirecting kai to where it is most needed. 🟢 And Kaicycle, who are delivering innovative urban agriculture initiatives. 🟢And Everybody Eats, who are providing a pay-as-you-feel dining experience to support communities experiencing financial and food insecurity. 🟢And, the Kāpiti Community Foodbank, who are supporting hundreds of families a year with food parcels. This supported totaled more than $106,000 in funding during our grants round. We are so proud to be able to deliver this transformative support in such a key area this year.

Why Do NGOs Distribute Food Vouchers Instead of Food Parcels? NGOs often choose food vouchers over parcels because they empower beneficiaries with choice, respect cultural preferences, and reduce waste. Vouchers support local economies by encouraging purchases from local markets and boosting small businesses and farmers. They are also more cost-efficient, avoiding logistical challenges like storage and transport. In emergencies, vouchers ensure access to diverse, fresh food without disrupting local supply chains. This approach promotes dignity, efficiency, and sustainable community development.

There is no sense in arguing if any one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals are more important to address than another. There are times, however, when one is exposed to an issue where the urgency to address a particular goal becomes extremely acute. Sustainable Development Goal 6 seeks to ensure access to water and sanitation for all. Safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene is fundamental for health and wellbeing including (but not limited to) improving health, enabling gender quality and increasing access to education. Water is essential and cannot be taken for granted. At the African Potential Group we fully support water.org and its efforts to unlock more funding to solve our planet’s water crisis.

Our EOFY June 2024 Campaign is now live as we look to raise $25k to support materials and resources at the Rooftop Garden we manage that is the hub for our WISE pathway and location for the growing of cultural foods to supply food literacy programs lifting people out of food poverty for CALD Groups and others facing barriers to employment .Our model is for skills, education, learning and development and not a direct free food relief provision. We also consider a supply to organisations with shared values at low costs or surplus for their onwards support. We know 48% of Australians have admitted to food security challenges with 20% facing extreme challenges currently. Help us look to supporting the supply chain during the next financial year by letting your employer know, your fellow employees or networks who are looking for a social offset at this critical tax time in the financial year.

Should you live in an Urban Sprawl? "Yes" came an answer during a classroom on Design Writing at the Anant Fellowship, a course on Built Environment. I wanted a backyard and a personal house plot to tend a garden and sow seeds on my mini organic farm. Is having a house like that sustainable? According to Prof David L Felman at the University of California Irvine, urban sprawl leads to privatization - expansion of electricity, water, and public service utility systems provided by corporations to service households away from towns and cities. However, in India, we do not have private water providers; their place is taken by water tankers (private providers now). Indian case differs from the US, France, the UK, and Canada. However, developed nations and India share a common thread; that is, you will see a mix of private and public providers depending on the geography of your house. In the US, a typical household, privately owned water utility service costs 59% more than the public water service. (ref:www.foodandwaterwatch.org) The governance of water companies and their nature decides how each behaves. Nature of public water services: A] Public utilities are monopolies; they can keep prices low and economies of scale high. They are operating on narrow earnings margins enough to recover costs of service. It also leads to unaccounted water losses, a shortage of conservation measures, and the fear of losing that tiny profit margin. 2] Wanting to keep low rates, they are slow to innovate with elected governing boards. Private companies (tankers in India) are also monopolies depending on the geography you live in; their nature of service is relatively reliable but expensive. Do ask who "owns" your water. Those living in cities have no absolute "rights" to water. This means we receive our water after someone pays. How much does your water cost? Time to think about it

The most common reason NOT to spend time in nature is... no reason at all. 🤷 Despite 81% of people feeling better after being in nature, 37% of us in the UK spend less than an hour in nature a week, according to the latest Hubbub polling. And although there are lots of barriers for lots of people, the most common barrier is, well, nothing. So, if you need a reason to get out there and smell the roses, here's 100 not-entirely-serious ones to choose from. Screenshot the sequence below to find yours! 🎲 And if you want 100 more reasons: we've just funded 100 community nature projects across the country with grants of up to £6k thanks to the Starbucks 5p Cup Charge. All will bring nature closer to people and people closer to nature. 🔄 Read about'em here: https://lnkd.in/e_dp9t9R 🤓 ++ P.S. I'm CEO of environmental charity Hubbub. #InternationalDayforBiologicalDiversity! Empower Future Environmental Leaders By Donating; https://lnkd.in/giVrnTPM Together with other young people working with Kudakwashe Kalonga under United Nations Association in Canada we are developing the Youth Biodiversity Framework to submit to Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada . This framework highlights the importance of youth engagement and how young people can contribute to Canada's international efforts to protect our planet. Our youth authors have been working hard to ensure that young voices are heard—their insights and dedication reflect the innovative and engaged perspectives of the next generation in protecting our planet. Developing builds on the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). This framework holds countries accountable to goals such as protecting 30% of land, waters, and seas by 2030. Protecting biodiversity is not just about conserving species—it's about maintaining the natural balance that supports life itself. Young people, being the first to be impacted by today's decisions, are critical in driving forward sustainable initiatives and maintaining a beautiful and diverse Canadian landscape.
