Weather related Wellness People come first. School second. A colleague of mine #AlaaHassan posted an amazing time lapse video below from the storm that hit Dubai and the UAE from Monday night through till early morning Wednesday. We were hit by historic rains from a natural storm in the UAE (no, cloud seeding does NOT cause countrywide 24/36 hours of rain! Cover this in science lessons when you all return to school, homeroom and science teachers!) The number one wellness focus for school communities today should be dealing with rain damage at home and damage at schools. School focus should not be: - assignments that might be missed - lessons maybe not attended - attendance data (only inspectors care about this!) - homework not done ... and bragging about the school and its 'seamless transition to online learning'. What was 'seamless' to admin and many others was not seamless for everyone. Even the airport has major issues: "Emirates is suspending check-in for passengers departing @DXB from 8:00am on 17 April until midnight, due to operational challenges caused by bad weather and road conditions. Affected customers can contact their booking agent or visit https://emirat.es/support for rebooking. @EmiratesSupport" ...courtesy of #TimeOut Dubai. My family in the States heard about our challenges too - photos of planes in flooded areas of airports all over the news at home. This is so relevant to schools. For Families of teachers and students... Homes leak. Apartments, condos, houses...there are leaks everywhere. Homes flood. Gutters overflow. Storm drains get blocked. Gardens are submerged. Patios are locked in by walls. Windows that got sustained driving rain don't always stay dry. Parking lots are submerged. Many cars flooded and beyond repair. There is a LOT of stress in many homes. For Schools... Schools have flooding. Walls with waterfalls, displays soaked and falling. Books damaged. Wifi wiring and wireless infrastructure possibly ruined. Even online services interrupted (I know my log in was not working this morning for a while!). So who is this note for? Educational Institutions...and teachers. While you may have enjoyed two days work-from-home, many others watched property get damaged, cars get flooded, and possessions get soaked. It was hard for many families to focus on school work Tuesday, due to conditions at home. And even today drying out damage is first for many. So what can school leaders do? Be kind. Be empathic. Be reasonable about how things settle out over the next several days or even weeks for many people here in the UAE connected to your schools. People won't remember a missed assignment - but they WILL remember if it cost their child marks or grades while their family was dealing with weather mess. Thank you #AlaaHassan for your post!
Yesterday's storm in Dubai reminded me of the incredible power of nature. More specifically it was a stark reminder of the balance between what we can control and what we cannot. While we can prepare and take precautions, nature's force remains beyond our grasp. It's a humbling lesson in resilience and acceptance. Video below was a time lapse taken between 2:45 pm and 3:00 pm! #Reflections #NatureVsControl #Dubai

Amidst the recent heavy rains in the UAE, our community's resilience and unity have shone brightly. The administration's efficient handling of the situation, ensuring safety and support for all affected, is truly remarkable. Amidst the chaos, there are heartwarming stories that remind us of the compassion and empathy within us all. For instance, the touching rescue of a cat clinging to a car door in the flooding by Dubai Police, as reported by Khaleej Times, illustrates the lengths to which our community goes to help even our furry friends in need. In addition to such heartening tales, we've witnessed countless acts of bravery from everyday heroes. From those who embarked on all-night rescue missions and distributed food and water to those who cared for stranded tourists and carried elderly people to safety, the spirit of solidarity is palpable. Their selflessness and compassion embody the essence of the UAE—a nation where diversity is celebrated, and unity prevails in times of adversity. Let's draw inspiration from these stories, both big and small, and let's continue to stand together, supporting one another through thick and thin. Together, we epitomize the resilience and strength of the UAE spirit. #Dubai, the world's #airport and the meeting place of humanity, has become a pivotal link between #continents and #civilizations, according to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE. Sheikh Mohammed recalled the #success of establishing an #airline in Dubai over four decades ago, which now employs over 112,000 people, connects 277 cities, and #transports over 50 million #passengers annually. However, Dubai's ambitions are far from being realized, with plans to open a larger #internationalairport, aiming to #connect every city across all five continents. (Credit: X.com/HHShkMohd)

The aftermath 🌏 "Après la tempête le calme" The contrast between dark clouds and clear skies can create a scene of pure beauty and renewal. It's amazing how nature can display such power and resilience, even in the face of chaos. Let's take a moment to appreciate the sense of calm that follows the storm. As a swiss national through military duty and then civil protection we had to be prepared for any natural disaster but I have to say it was truly inspiring to see such ⏳swift and coordinated responses from the Dubai Civil Defence H.Q. where all governments and private institutions have worked together to ensure safety for all in the country. 👏We witnessed as well countless selfless acts of heroism from everyday people. Highlighting the solidarity, kindness and strength of the community here in the UAE. Indeed, it's a once-in-a-lifetime natural event, with such a significant amount of rain occurring only once every 75 years. Beautiful reminder of the power of nature and the importance of sustainable practices for future generations. 👨💼 Remarkable how technology enables us to stay connected and productive even in the face of extreme circumstances where I was able to continue serving my clients by maintaining normalcy. #UAE #Nature #Renewal #Rethinkeverything #GovernmentofDubai
