New green hydrogen projects are gradually taking pace in Asia as alternative net zero pathways for industries are desperately needed. But with costs still high and supply chain challenges, what are the prospects of green hydrogen in the region? Managing director Putra Adhiguna discussed the deployment of green hydrogen in Pakistan. He stressed the importance of prioritising specific hard-to-abate sectors instead of applying a broad-brush approach encompassing all potential use cases. As for blue hydrogen, he commented markets that are worried about the volatility of fossil gas today should be worried about blue hydrogen in future too. Thanks to Renewables First for hosting and moderating the insightful discussion. #hydrogen #sustainability #energy

🌍 Green Hydrogen: Driving Sustainable Industrial Development 🚀 The transition to green hydrogen (GH2) presents a unique opportunity for sustainable industrial growth, particularly for developing countries rich in renewable resources. A recent report by UNIDO, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) outlines the transformative potential of GH2 and provides a comprehensive policy toolkit to guide developing nations through this transition. 🔋 Decarbonizing Hard-to-Abate Sectors: GH2 offers a clean alternative to fossil fuels, supporting industries like steel, chemicals, and shipping to drastically reduce their carbon footprints. 🏭 Economic Growth & Job Creation: By engaging in both upstream (renewable energy generation) and downstream (GH2 processing and export) activities, countries can foster economic diversification, technological innovation, and create green jobs. 🌐 Global Trade Potential: With the global GH2 market expected to grow, developing countries stand to benefit by becoming key players in international hydrogen trade. Countries like Chile, Namibia, and Saudi Arabia are leading the way. 📈 Challenges: High production costs, technology acquisition, and regulatory hurdles remain, but targeted policies and international collaboration can overcome these barriers. Governments, industries, and international bodies must work together to build robust frameworks that support the full potential of GH2, ensuring a just, inclusive transition that benefits both the economy and the environment. #GreenHydrogen #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #IndustrialDevelopment #RenewableEnergy #GH2 #ClimateAction #SustainableEnergyAnalytics #SustainableEnergyAnalysis

🏦 Green hydrogen production in #Portugal 🇵🇹 is given nearly 50% of the EU share of funds for the European Hydrogen Bank 🇪🇺. #Galp and #MadoquaPower2X are the recipients. In November 2023, the European Commission 🇪🇺 officially launched the European Hydrogen Bank, with a first round budgeted at 720 million euros. Two Portuguese companies were allocated 45.8%, totaling 330 million euros, out of the total amount budgeted, while the remainder will be distributed to five other projects from Spain, Norway and Finland. Portugal’s #PortOfSines is becoming an #EU #GreenHydrogenHub and the two new pilot projects by MadoquaPower2X and Galp that will be funded under the European Hydrogen Bank are expected to produce around 511 kilotonnes and 216 kilotonnes of green hydrogen respectively. The EU has set a target of producing 10 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030 as part of the #REPowerEU plan and Portugal is turning out to be a major player for the successful implementation of the European Hydrogen Bank. Ammonia cracking is often considered the best option to transport hydrogen via ship. The problem? It's a really bad option. Those two statements don't contradict each other. They just lead to the inevitable conclusion that hydrogen won't be transported via ship in any meaningful quantities, because there are no good options to do so.
