If we valued the unpaid care work done in the US it would be worth more than $1 trillion a year. Two-thirds (65 percent) of this unpaid care work is done by women, who spend an average of nearly 296 hours each a year on caregiving, equating to more than $643 billion in unpaid care work annually. Important new analysis from Katherine Gallagher Robbins and Jessica Mason and colleagues from the National Partnership for Women & Families on the pressing need for policies that support caregiving. #carecantwait

New data from the National Partnership for Women & Families shows that Americans’ unpaid caregiving is worth more than $1 trillion annually–and women are doing two-thirds of the work. While unpaid care is often done with love, it is labor nevertheless–labor critical to the functioning of our families, neighborhoods, and our economy. Yet despite its importance, U.S. policies have historically undervalued and under-supported care work, failing to provide paid leave, affordable child care, and home and community-based services. We must come together as a nation to advance policies and funding for quality, equitable caregiving supports. #CareCantWait https://lnkd.in/g9iKWyhK

Care is a universal need throughout our lives—whether we're young, ill, aging, or facing disabilities. Providing care is vital both socially and economically, and it fosters strong community connections. Despite its importance, caregiving often falls on individuals who receive little support or recognition for their efforts. Unpaid care work benefits society by nurturing future generations and strengthening communities, yet policies fail to recognize or compensate it fairly, particularly disadvantaging Black, Latine/x, Indigenous, and immigrant women. What can be done: Policies should provide financial support for informal caregivers and enable families to care for loved ones at home—so that institutional care is one choice of many, not the only option for families with care needs. A comprehensive approach is needed to value caregiving and ensure families can thrive while providing care. This is a must-read report for HR leaders, employers, and employees. It gives a snapshot of the U.S. caregiving landscape, and covers the historic undervaluing of caregiving, the lack of child care affordability and accessibility in the U.S., the difficulties of eldercare options, and much more. ⤵
Care is, and has always been, woven into the fabric of daily life—from women doing a majority of unpaid care work at home, to the Black, Brown, and immigrant women supporting families in their homes through domestic work, and those providing care and support to children, older adults, and disabled people in their homes and communities. 🥪❓ Are you part of a sandwich generation? Gen X women are caught right between two generations that are both in need of care: our children on the one hand, and our aging parents on the other. 👶👋🧓 🌊 Earlier this week, we posted about the caregiving crisis that’s facing women. As our population gets older, the sandwich generation is going to be hit the worst: they’ll be tasked with caring for young children AND older adults, all while demands on our caregiving systems will be at a record high. 📈 WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS! Right now, it’s not too late to plan ahead. In this blog post, our Founder & CEO Mallory McGrath talks more about what needs to be done 👇 https://lnkd.in/gcVfdE78 #AgingandEndOfLifePlanning #LegacyPlanning #AgingPlanning #EndOfLifePlanning #EstatePlanning #FinancialPlanning

As young(er) parents, we often hear how our parents struggled, just as much as we are, when they were raising us. In 1990-1995, the average child care cost was about $2.50 per hour. Since the 1990’s, child care costs for a single infant has increased 214%. Comparatively, wages have increased by 22%. As a family of four, we pay $3,000 each month for daycare. Our mortgage is only $1,480. Realistically, my husband and I could afford two more mortgages each month. As a country, we have reached a point where women are being forced to exit the workforce, employers are unable to operate efficiently, parents are working just to pay daycare costs, and couples are choosing to have less children (or none at all). At what point will someone realize the severity of the child care crisis. As we move towards election season, I am closely following along to see who is truly in tune with the very real struggles of the average American family. #remotework #workplaceflexibility #childcarecrisis #maternalmentalhealth

We need to focus on creating solutions for working parents who are battling the rising costs of child care. It's something that's impacting people I love (and their littles.) Let's start having more conversations about how to solve this challenge. And, if you're a daycare facility owner, I'd love to hear the challenges of operating that type of business model from your end, too.

We need to start thinking about this problem strategically. How can we ensure accessible high-quality child care while improving educator livelihood as well? I think a solution is very possible when we look for creative solutions at the community level.
