Japan's Prime Minister Kishida announced various initiatives, including providing disaster relief aid to Niue and fishery research vessels to Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu. These efforts aim to strengthen ties and address shared challenges in the Pacific. #Tuvalu - Climate Change and Coastal Adaptation Tuvalu has approved the second phase of the Tuvalu Coastal Adaptation Project (TCAP II) with funding from the Australian and New Zealand governments. The latest update on the levels and risk of #coral #bleaching in the Western Indian Ocean. This as fears grow that the extent of mass bleaching may ‘graduate’ from several regional events to another global one. Please submit any new bleaching observations before the next update on 31 March, to have the most up to date information inform this question. What we do know is that heat levels globally are at record levels in 2023-24, a massive step up from the last major events in 2015-17. The world must take action now to minimize the overshoot of 1.5C warming we know is now inevitable. Every tenth of a degree avoided is critical.

The Arctic Archipelago of Svalbard is 99.5% owned by Norway. Russia owns a coal extraction site. The last privately owned slice of land is for sale, and China is showing an interest. This would entitle China to call itself an Arctic nation. US, Canada and Finland will collaborate on the produciton of the ice-breakers for #Alaska in frames of the ICE Pact Agreement. #Infrastructure investment, particularly in icebreakers, is vital for the Arctic. Icebreakers ensure access to remote areas that are otherwise inaccessable, support strategic operations but also contrubute to communities economy, facilitate scientific research, and strengthen search-and-rescue and emergency preparedness. Recent analysis from July 2020 to January 2024 reveals a troubling trend in the Mediterranean Sea, with 757 oil slicks covering an expanse of 1.9 million hectares. The study, based on data from SkyTruth's Cerulean platform, highlights significant concerns: • 75% of these incidents involved oil/chemical tankers. • Six flag states — Marshall Islands, Panama, Malta, Singapore, Liberia, and Togo — were linked to over 60% of these slicks by identifiable vessels. • Notably, six vessels were identified as repeat offenders, contributing to multiple oil slicks, including container ships and oil/chemical tankers under various flags such as Egypt, Hong Kong, Panama, Russia, Marshall Islands, and Liberia. • The Greek exclusive economic zone (EEZ) recorded the highest number of oil slicks (182), followed by Italy (163) and Egypt (102). • Two critical marine protected areas (MPAs) — the Mediterranean Cetacean Migration Corridor and the Pelagos Sanctuary for the Conservation of Marine Mammals — faced the highest impact within their borders. This analysis underscores the urgent need for stringent regulatory measures and enhanced maritime practices. The Mediterranean not only supports an abundant array of marine life but is also crucial for regional economic activities, touching 22 countries and hosting 87 seaports. Over the next 250 million years, Earth's continents are expected to amalgamate into a single landmass known as #Neopangaea. The #Atlantic and #IndianOcean will expand before new subduction zones bring the continents back together, leading to significant changes. By this time, most #continents and #islands are forecasted to collide with #Eurasia. Looking ahead 250 million years, the Atlantic is projected to have closed, with #NorthAmerica having merged with #Africa but positioned further south than its current location. #SouthAmerica is anticipated to encircle the southern tip of Africa, enclosing the Indo-Atlantic Ocean. Additionally, the #PacificOcean is set to widen, encircling half the #Earth. The map below shows how our #planet will look with current international borders in the next 250 million years.
