The AEC is an independent organization created to facilitate Arctic B2B activities and responsible economic development.
Om oss
The Arctic Economic Council (AEC) is an independent organization that facilitates Arctic business-to-business activities and responsible economic development through the sharing of best practices, technological solutions, standards, and other information. We work to facilitate responsible business and economic development of the Arctic and its communities. Our goal is to share and advocate for best practices, technological solutions, and standards. We support market accessibility and provide advice and a business perspective to the work of the Arctic Council. Our members represent a wide range of businesses operating in the Arctic—from mining and shipping companies to reindeer herding and indigenous economic development corporations. This mix of interests across business sectors ensures that our work is carried out in an inclusive and sustainable manner. Representing the wide variety of Arctic businesses, it is important for the AEC to also be the voice of small and medium sized enterprises. We represent the true depth of Arctic know-how. Among our representatives we have experience in doing business across the Arctic. Local knowledge is often key in operating in the Arctic. Engaging with the AEC gives you the opportunity to access both local and indigenous knowledge. The AEC is open to corporations, partnerships and indigenous groups that have an economic interest in the Arctic. We are open to membership applications from Arctic and sub-Arctic entities. For further information on how to become a member of the Arctic Economic Council, feel free to contact the AEC Secretariat: info@arcticeconomiccouncil.com

Arctic Partnership Week in #Korea takes place this week with a focus on the people of the #Arctic. This is the 9th time that organisations like Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) and Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) invites stakeholders from across the Arctic to talk about partnerships, policies and people in the Arctic. Our executive director Mads Qvist Frederiksen gave this year’s keynote focusing on the opportunities with the twin transition in the Arctic, where we green our industries and digitalise our societies, and what it will mean for the blue economy, for researchers and the people in the north. AEC will later this week also host the Korea-Arctic Blue Economy Cooperation Seminar together with Korean partners. Here speakers like UMJI KIM, Mette Asmussen, Lisa Olsson, Yisoo Kim, Young Seok Kim, will present on subsea cables, green shipping and hydrogen.

Read key takeaways from panel on EU-Norway Green Alliance by AEC Chairman Kai Simon Eikli Yuen at the Arctic Frontiers event in Brussels. #Arctic
I had a great time in the discussion panel “Developments in maritime/energy tech and cooperation under the EU-Norway Green Alliance”, organized by Arctic Frontiers in Brussels. My key messages 👇 1️⃣ We have the technology to decarbonize shipping! What we don’t have is a market structure that gives zero emission fuels a chance. To speed things up, the ongoing negotiations on climate measures in the IMO must result in a pricing mechanism for CO2 emissions in international waters. Let shipowners pay for their emissions, then use those revenues to minimize the price gap between fossil fuels and zero emission fuels. The EU ETS shows us that this can work in practice – shipowners have been paying for emissions through this scheme since Jan. 1st this year. It has proven itself transparent, fair and not overly encumbered by red tape – it’s just too bad that it’s limited to Europe, as shipping is global. And while we’re glad that Norway is part of the EU ETS, it is unfortunate that the revenues raised by the Norwegian government are not reinvested into a green maritime transition, as EU member states are obliged to do. We could move much faster if the Norwegian government used both the stick *and* the carrot. 2️⃣ Streamline regulations! The integrity of a single European market is key. While Norway has access to this market through the EEA agreement, this is based on the premise of common rules and regulations. The backlog of EU regulations that should have been integrated by Norway is not only long, but also covers essential energy market regulations like the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II of 2018). This lack of market integrity presents a real regulatory risk that undermines our most important trade agreement by far. The uncertainty stemming from the backlog is significant, and could for example hamper our members’ engagement in developing Norwegian offshore wind farms. 3️⃣ What about the EU-Norway Green Alliance? I think it’s important to be clear that the alliance is essentially a platform for dialogue on green policies that lie *outside* of the EEA Agreement. This can certainly be nice to have. For instance, as the EEA doesn’t cover trade policy, Norwegian interests can be marginalized now that we’re seeing increasing trade rivalries in green industries. It's not unlikely that this could undermine our ability to contribute to a green transition in Europe in the near future. However, it is the EEA agreement which is the foundation of our connection to the European market, and it is under pressure right now. My thanks to Arctic Frontiers for organizing the event and to Anu Fredrikson for expertly moderating the session! Alina Kovalenko Markus Rautanen Oliver Wilson Jenny Turton

International Polar Foundation have awarded Siu-Tsiu, a non-profit social enterprise based in Greenland, with Laurence Trân Arctic Futures Award. Sui-Tsui recived 7,500 Euros of financial assistance for their contribution to the sustainable development in the Arctic communities. "Siu-Tsiu is a deserving winner of this year's Laurence Tran Award because of their ability to make a difference for young people in remote communities in Greenland. In the Arctic Economic Council we want thriving Arctic communities and Siu-Tisu helps to motivate people to make a difference locally. They tailor their solutions to the local context and have in recent years managed to scale up their solution," says Mads Qvist Frederiksen. Northern Canada has faced increasing challenges from climate change, with wildfires and flooding causing significant damage to critical infrastructure. In recent years, these events have disrupted fibre lines, leading to lengthy interruptions in telecommunications services. The CNFL addresses this by creating a fully redundant network—if one section is damaged, internet and cellular traffic can reroute seamlessly, minimizing disruptions for homes and businesses. This ambitious project was made possible through investments from Territorial and Federal government programs and Northwestel contributions. As the leading telecommunications provider in Canada’s North, Northwestel serves 97 communities across the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, British Columbia, and Alberta. The CNFL traverses many northern Indigenous traditional territories, with its success deeply rooted in the collaboration and traditional knowledge shared by Indigenous rights holders throughout the project. This marks a transformative step forward for connectivity in the North! #Canada #Arctic #Connectivity #fibre #internet
The Canada North Fibre Loop is live, and with it comes significant protection from internet and cellular service disruptions for our customers in Yukon and Northwest Territories. We're grateful to the many partners who have helped make this significant milestone a reality, and honoured to operate this robust fibre network on the traditional territories of so many Indigenous nations. https://lnkd.in/g4hUuBbR

🇬🇱 We welcome new AEC member NunaGreen. 🇬🇱 NunaGreen is a Greenlandic company with a mandate to develop renewable energy projects in Greenland. NunaGreen was reconstructed in 2022 following the Government of Greenland’s decision to cease oil exploration and focus on renewable energy and green transition instead. This shift marked a complete transformation for the company, and over the past 1.5 years, NunaGreen has been fully focused on establishing itself as a robust company, initiating extension of the Buksefjorden Hydropower Plant and construction of Hydropower Plant and transmission lines near Qasigiannguit. Read full interview with NunaGreen CEO Aviaaja Karlshøj Knudsen on the AEC website. See link in the comments. #Arctic #Greenland #hydropower #renewable
