Just a pipe dream? The Plumbing, Heating and Home Services industry has it's work cut out if it's going to install 600,000 low carbon heat pumps every year by 2028. I spoke to Peter Holmwood, Managing Director of SES Home Services about how the industry will ramp up to achieve this - even despite a dire shortage of trained technicians. Manual J, Manual S, Automatic Savings: "That is why contractors should resist the urge to oversize heat pump systems, particularly in heating climates. “When did it become okay to oversize an air conditioner? If you said never, you were correct, because it never was acceptable. We've gone through this before — the bigger isn’t better thing — over and over and over … There's no free lunch. Either you're going to put in something that properly dehumidifies the space, or you're not.” Contractors who ignore that advice do so at their own peril, as this could lead to heat pumps getting a bad name again — similar to what happened several decades ago. This could undermine current efforts towards electrification, which are fueled by substantial financial incentives." Ed Janowiak in ACHR NEWS #HeatPumps #CleanEnergy #HVAC #ASHP

I put a post on ‘Heat Pumps UK’ on Facebook regarding the use of Flexys on Heat Pump installs. There are very mixed views on the use of Flexys. I always thought it was ‘best practice’ to use them, some installers are saying not to use them as they attract dirt and debris in the system. I know they can be problematic in gas boilers as I have seen this first hand. Interestingly, most homes in the UK probably have multiple flexys in use on the plumbing systems, and I have personally changed probably 20 or so that have split in the last 2-3 years, obviously with catastrophic results. I wonder if there is any data out there regarding flexys and the use of ? Would be interesting to get a manufacturers perspective on this ?

Three Reasons Your Tankless Water Heater Isn't Producing Hot Water Experiencing issues with your tankless water heater not producing hot water can be frustrating. Three common factors may be contributing to this problem, and understanding these can help you seek the appropriate solutions. Regular servicing of your unit is crucial to maintaining its efficiency and reliability. 1. Mineral Buildup: Hard water can cause mineral deposits to accumulate in your tankless water heater, obstructing the heating elements and reducing efficiency. Regular descaling and maintenance can prevent this buildup. 2. Faulty Heating Elements: Over time, the heating elements in your water heater may wear out or malfunction, preventing the unit from heating water properly. A professional inspection can identify and replace defective components. 3. Gas or Electrical Issues: Insufficient gas supply or electrical problems can impede the heater's ability to function. Ensuring that your unit receives a consistent power source is vital for optimal performance. For residents experiencing these issues, contacting a professional for thorough servicing is essential. 🚿 When to Drain and Flush Your Water Heater for Peak Performance 🚿 As colder months approach, it’s essential to keep your water heater running smoothly. Draining and flushing your water heater removes sediment buildup, improving performance and extending its lifespan. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to get the job done: 1️⃣ Turn Off the Heater: Switch off the power to your electric heater or set the gas valve to "pilot" for gas heaters. 2️⃣ Connect a Hose to the Drain Valve: Attach a hose to the drain valve located at the bottom of the tank, and run the other end outside or into a drain. 3️⃣ Open the Drain Valve: Open the valve to let the water and sediment flow out. Be careful, as the water will be hot! 4️⃣ Flush with Cold Water: Once the tank is drained, open the cold water supply valve to flush out any remaining sediment. Let the water run for a few minutes. 5️⃣ Close the Valves and Refill: Close the drain valve, remove the hose, and reopen the cold water valve to fill the tank. 6️⃣ Power It Back On: Once the tank is full, turn the power back on or switch the gas valve to the "on" position. Regularly draining your water heater helps it run more efficiently and last longer, saving you from unexpected breakdowns during the coldest months. 🛠️ 🔧 Need help with your HVAC, plumbing, or electrical systems? I'm sure many will have already seen this and inwardly digested the content. I know and understand about HP's as do 1000's of other in the HVAC World. However if the Heatly.com findings are correct, surely we are the ones to blame, allowing the Heating Industry to create the confusion. If not us who has? Where does the Media get it's negative press from? I would suggest disgruntled home owners in the majority of cases. However, it is the established installers who also peddle the bad news, Why? We are in the process of wrapping up a project few would bother with. Why? This Client (not ours) would have ended up with a "Dogs Breakfast" had we not been invited to develop the project on behalf of our Client Why? Simply, the 1st bit was easy as the installers had proven what they had invented worked. What they were unable to do through inexperience, add their solution to incorporating a HP. Today after dozens if 1000's of Hrs through teaching and mentoring they understand how a HP works. So onwards and upwards for one small company, leaving 1000's of heating engineers scratching their heads, unable to move competently into a new era of alternative heating.

The hotun dry trap tundish and the hotun detect alarm unit, installed together, is your key to reducing emergency call-outs and getting more business. If the installer fits hotun detect, the homeowner will call the engineer or plumber to come out and fix the problem before it gets worse - which means more business for you. And if there’s a problem with the customer’s boiler, the alarm will sound in advance of it completely breaking down. So you can come out to the homeowner as a scheduled appointment, rather than having to respond immediately. Make yourself happy. Install the hotun range.
