“Community” can be such a junk-drawer word. “We offer community” “Our company is a real community” “I’m looking for community” What are we really talking about? Most of my life and career has been devoted to building “community.” Starting businesses, churches, non-profits. I stopped to process the best groups of relationships I’ve experienced and found 4 key principles to a real comminity: 1. Real Community is rooted in sacrificial commitment - when someone gives up something without gain, that sacrifice runs deep to build real friendship. Commitment is counter-cultural today. Let your yes be yes. It speaks volumes to others. 2. Real Community is regular with shared leadership to make it regular - the difference between events and community is that events bring people together for a moment while community brings people together for moments over time. 3. Real Community is united by purpose that runs deeper than money, work, or things - that’s one of the reasons real faith communities stand the test of time. We are united by something WAY beyond ourselves. 4. Real Community is rooted in the equation of friendship over time - we give of ourselves for longer periods of time, especially when it’s hard and we gain nothing, because we care about the relationship and serving our friends.

Would you consider sharing? Mentorship and Knowledge Sharing: If one business is more established, consider mentoring the other. Share your experiences, insights, and advice to help the other business grow. Resource Sharing: Collaborate on resource-intensive projects by sharing manpower, equipment, or facilities. For example, if you both need a specific piece of equipment only occasionally, you can purchase it together and share access. Community Engagement: Partner on community engagement initiatives or charitable projects. This not only benefits the community but also enhances your brand image. Products or services to your respective customer bases: Offer incentives for successful referrals. Market Expansion: If you both have similar businesses in different geographic regions, consider expanding into each other's markets. This can be particularly beneficial if you're in different cities or countries.

Community Engagement: The Key to Successful Funding More funders are now prioritizing projects that genuinely reflect community needs and involvement. Here’s why early community engagement matters: 🔍 Identify the right focus: Community feedback ensures your project targets the most urgent and relevant needs. How are you identifying these needs? Who is informing you about them? How many people have described the same need? 🤝 Demonstrate support: Funders are more likely to back initiatives with visible community buy-in. How can you connect the engagement of your customers/service users with your funders? How can you rally your community to participate in the dialogue about what is needed? 💡 Gain valuable insights: Engaging early allows you to refine your project and strengthen your funding proposal with real input. Running pilots and interviewing service users or potential users is key to making grant applications impactful and your charity more effective! 🤝 Build partnerships: Collaborating with local organizations can expand your reach and credibility. Exploring areas where you haven't gone before can foster new partnerships. When considering your current connections, ask yourself, "Who is missing?" Take a look at a map of your surrounding area—what groups, businesses, or other charities can you reach out to?

How do you go about finding a Chair of trustees? 🤔 We at Football Journeys are on the hunt for a new Chair. But it's not like people walk around with "Looking to become a Chair of Trustees" sign hung round their neck. Obvs the ad is on Reach Volunteering but where else to hunt? They can just be a normal human. Ideally one who: • can build strong relationships and collaborate on plans and oversight of the charity's work with young people in London 🤝 • understands a bit about good charity governance 📊 • is genuinely nice to work with 😊 Being at the top of the trustee table doesn't mean they should be • a dictator 🚫 • all knowing on all issues 😇 • someone who'll ignore everyone else's input 🙉 Should we looking for people who are passionate about young people, football, and filmmaking? ⚽ 🎥 Or should I think of just have a general interest in the charity sector?
