Planning ahead to adapt our coastal ports to sea level rise is also part of #Kustvisie. 👉 Yesterday the last info session for the strategic policy plan took place in Stad Nieuwpoort. Not only the extensive beaches 🏖 need to grow with sea level rise, also the port ⚓️ requires additional protection measures in the far future, on top of the storm surge barrier being build today. 🧭 By creating roadmaps for all our coastal ports today, the different strategic pathways that can be followed become clear, as well as the future tipping points when decisions are needed. So we are prepared and have a plan to guarantee the future of our ports for economy, recreation, and also dewatering of the hinterland. Interested to dive further into this subject and to further detail pragmatic action plans. Geraldton has always had a long and proud connection to the fishing industry, with much of our town's history rooted in the sector. Mid West Ports plays a key role in facilitating this ongoing connection through our management of the Geraldton Fishing Boat Harbour, along with ensuring any future development of this area is planned and strategic to better serve businesses within it, industries that use it and the Geraldton community who enjoy it. The creation of the Geraldton Fishing Boat Harbour (FBH) Development Plan outlines a strategic direction forward for the precinct, encouraging and enabling expansion of existing, as well as new, industries and businesses. The development plan, endorsed last year by the state government, is the product of stakeholder and community engagement, research, and analysis, offering a strategic direction for how the FBH can achieve long-term sustainable growth, with key focuses on areas including: 🔵 Expansion enabling an increase of businesses operating in the area. 🔵 Segregation of land uses through zoning. 🔵 Inclusion of a tourism precinct to better serve port users including the general public. In addition, the development plan will not only guide the future development of the FBH but also help with the implementation of the Port Maximisation Project, implemented to ensure the Port of Geraldton can increase its capacity and remain a gateway to trade and tourism for the Mid West. Perth’s Causeway Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridges project is nearing completion and in recognition of its commitment to Country, it has been officially renamed Boorloo Bridge, recognising Boorloo as the Noongar name for Perth. The bridge is due to open on Sunday 22 December. The two cable-stay bridges over the Swan River for pedestrians and cyclists have been designed and built by the Causeway Link Alliance, comprised of WSP, Main Roads Western Australia, Civmec and Seymour Whyte. The project recently won the Planning Institute of Australia’s WA Awards for Excellence, in the category of Planning for Country, with the jury praising “the remarkable scale Causeway Link Alliance’s commitment to interpreting the Noongar culture and history.” Boorloo Bridge will provide a safer crossing for the more than 1,400 cyclists and 1,900 pedestrians who currently travel on the narrow path of the Causeway Bridge daily.
