Driving the Future of Circular Economy in Industrial Parks In today's rapidly evolving industrial landscape, the shift towards a circular economy is no longer optional—it’s essential. Industrial parks present a unique opportunity to foster this transformation by serving as hubs of resource efficiency, innovation, and sustainable growth. During a recent workshop with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), our experts, Dr. Desti Alkano and Candra Sutama, explored key strategies to harness the potential of industrial parks as enablers of the circular economy. The discussion highlighted three crucial factors: • Agglomeration & Resource Optimization: Concentrated industries drive efficient resource utilization, minimizing waste and enhancing resource sharing. • Industrial Symbiosis & Cross-Sector Collaboration: Diverse industries collaborate to transform by-products into valuable inputs, reducing environmental impact and creating value. • Government & Policy Support: Regulatory frameworks and incentives create an environment conducive to the adoption of sustainable practices. We thank to the organizing committee, i.e. the UNIDO – GEIPP Indonesia and the Ministry of Industry, and our fellow speakers, Dewi Muliana, Director of Industrial Regional Development at the Ministry of Industry, and Priyanto Rohmatullah, Director of Environment at Bappenas, for an insightful and inspiring session. We’re happy to see the growing interest to adopting circular economy practices in industrial parks across Indonesia. The momentum is growing, and we believe that by rethinking business models, investing in technology, and strengthening partnerships, we can build a more resilient and sustainable industrial future. #CircularEconomy #IndustrialParks #Sustainability #ECADIN #UNIDO #Collaboration #Innovation #ResourceEfficiency

Driven by the urgent need to address the impacts of urbanization, which exacerbates environmental degradation, air pollution, and biodiversity loss, modern cities face a significant challenge in balancing infrastructure development with nature preservation. Smart Forest City was introduced as a solution that integrates smart technology with the concept of sustainability, utilizing green technology to protect nature while providing advanced urban services. This idea was first proposed by architect Stefano Boeri, who suggested the concept of vertical buildings with plants that can absorb carbon emissions, offering a concrete example of how future cities can play a role in mitigating climate change. Smart Forest City is a choice for the future because this concept not only maintains ecological balance but also creates a better living environment for its residents. By adopting renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions, and preventing deforestation, this city can support global sustainability and enhance human quality of life. In Indonesia, this vision is reflected in the development of the new capital city, Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN), which is committed to using 100% renewable energy and protecting 75% of its area as green space. IKN is not only a symbol of a new government but also a representation of Indonesia's concrete steps toward building a sustainable and smart city. This infographic was created for the NAFORTIWAN 2024 infographic poster competition. #NAFORTIWAN2024 #SmartForestCity

🌏 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮'𝘀 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗽: 𝗡𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 #Indonesia 🇮🇩 is embarking on an unprecedented journey, moving its capital from #Jakarta to #Nusantara, a visionary city rising in East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. Slated for inauguration in just two months on August 17, 2024, coinciding with Indonesian Independence Day, Nusantara symbolizes a new era for the nation. 🇮🇩 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗡𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗮? Jakarta, the current capital, has long been burdened by overpopulation, pollution, and the looming threat of sinking. Nusantara offers a fresh start. An ambitious project valued at US$35 billion, encompassing 2,560 km² of hilly landscapes, forests, and a natural bay. This move embodies the Wawasan Nusantara vision, reflecting Indonesia's identity as an archipelagic state. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 Construction kicked off in July 2022, with the first phase focusing on essential infrastructure like government offices, schools, and hospitals. By October 2024, 6,000 civil servants are expected to relocate, with numbers doubling by year-end. The Ministry of Public Works and Housing will be the first to move, followed by the Office of the President. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo remains optimistic, assuring that the capital is on track despite recent resignations within the overseeing body. His commitment is clear: Nusantara will host this year's Independence Day celebrations, marking a significant milestone in its development. 𝗔 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁, 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 Nusantara is not just a new city; it's a smart, green city designed for the future. With renewable energy sources and environmentally-friendly waste management, it aims to be a model for sustainable urban living. This transformation aligns perfectly with global ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) trends, showcasing Indonesia's dedication to sustainable growth. 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 While challenges remain, including securing private investment and navigating political transitions, the spirit of innovation and resilience drives Nusantara forward. President-elect Prabowo Subianto has pledged to continue this monumental project, potentially refining its scope and design. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 At Dezan Shira & Associates, we see incredible investment opportunities in Nusantara. Indonesia’s government has issued regulations streamlining business licenses for investors. With sectors like maritime, agriculture, energy, and technology open for operation, and incentives such as significant tax exemptions and extended land use permits, the landscape is ripe for strategic investments. Explore these opportunities further and check out the links in the comments for a detailed discussion on corporate establishment requirements and tax benefits in Nusantara. Nusantara is more than a capital; it's a testament to Indonesia's bold vision and enduring spirit. 🌿🏙️

🌏 There we go—off to Bali, Seseh, Makassar, and Jakarta! 🛫 Daphne Gerritse, Stella, Sammie, and I are very excited to live in Indonesia for the coming two months! When Silvia de Vaan and I started SweepSmart in 2014, I never expected I’d have the opportunity to bring my family to Indonesia for business. Last year, we embarked on a similar journey, working on projects in the Moluccas/Ambon and Delterra. I never imagined that this engagement would steer us and SweepSmart in this direction. Waste separation at source has always been a core value for us. However, segregation at source requires significant effort and financing to collection fees, which is a major bottleneck in the global south. (SweepSmart will publish an article on this topic soon.) To address this, we—alongside Siddharth Agarwal, Renewi, Dirk Van Der Wal, Waltec Practical Waste Solutions, Rob Tholenaars, Rohith Kumar K H, Sandy Indriana, Lotte de Koning, Peter Vingerhoeds, Joop Suurmeijer, Patrick Deprez, Renewi Nederland, PUM —developed a unique waste management facility. This facility can process low-value mixed waste at scale, turning it into recyclables, compost, and SRF/RDF (alternative fuel). With this process, we can divert ~80% of waste from landfills and, importantly, avoid the generation of methane emissions. We need at least 100,000 tons per year and a tipping fee that is a fraction of what we’re used to in North West Europe. Together with our visionary local partner, Recovered Indonesia Alex Chandra, we have chosen a forward-thinking municipality almost ready to implement this innovative solution. What’s truly remarkable is that we’re leveraging proven technologies, ingeniously integrated to maximize efficiency. This waste challenge aligns perfectly with my passion and expertise. While much of the technology is already in place, our mission is to adapt it to the local ecosystem, ensure a perfect market fit, and scale it up effectively. I am confident that we can resolve this waste issue within our generation, but time is of the essence! Stay tuned for more updates. Turning waste into happiness! 🌟 #Sustainability #WasteManagement #Innovation #CircularEconomy #Indonesia #SweepSmart

Chemical Clusters and Chemical Derivative Products. 6. Low Carbon Energy Cluster. 2 CLUSTERS SUPPORTERS 1. 21st Century Education Cluster. 2. Smart City and Industry Center 4.0. In an era that continues to develop rapidly, the concept of smart cities has become an important foundation for sustainable urban development. In smart city development, the use of technology and innovation to design and build smart buildings has broad benefits. Smart buildings have the potential to increase resource use efficiency, optimize occupant comfort, and reduce carbon emissions as a negative impact on the environment. Therefore, the presence of smart buildings in the IKN area will be an important milestone in promoting a sustainable future. Samarinda City is the 'heart' with its role as the historical center of East Kalimantan with the renewable energy sector. Balikpapan city as 'muscle', which functions as a downstream oil and gas and logistics node for East Kalimantan. And East Kalimantan Province plays a role as a 'lung' by strengthening upstream agriculture and natural tourism centers. Cooperation between these regions will be a trigger for the development of Eastern Indonesia. The nation's capital will act as a 'nerve' for central government areas and a green innovation hub.
