Every one of these countries, with the exception of the United States, conducts their elections within a single day and announces the results the following day after voting concludes. The vast majority employ methods such as paper ballots, inked thumbs, and voter identification to ensure the integrity of the vote. Notably, several of these nations have a voting population that is two to four times larger than that of the United States. It was not long ago that the United States also utilized paper ballots, held elections on a single day, and announced results by the next day. "Months before the elections, the MK party began attacking the credibility of the Electoral Commission of South Africa, laying the groundwork for the ‘big lie’ theory." An important piece on the SA elections but also on how to fact-check elections. We know from numerous studies that creating or reinforcing a false belief is a marathon, not a sprint. People's attitudes tend, on average, to be slow to change, so those who want to undermine trust in once-trusted institutions start early. Fact-checking needs to be a marathon too, and, while fact-checking specific claims is important - we need to be better at mapping and exposing the false narratives they construct too.

The 2024 National and Provincial Elections marked a watershed moment in South African politics, as the AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS lost its parliamentary majority for the first time in three decades. Garnering only 40.18% of the vote, the ANC's decline signifies a growing voter discontent and shifting political allegiances. This outcome propels the need for coalition government discussions, with the ANC aiming to form a Government of National Unity. As the political terrain shifts, South Africa stands on the brink of a new era of governance and collaboration: https://lnkd.in/deB6jS27
