Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. As we grieve along w/ the loved ones for trans lives lost in the last year, we also stand in steadfast solidarity w/ #Transhealth leaders and advocates. Because ALL health care must be gender-affirming. A key development in Ontario, supported by the work of @OntarioHealthOH and others, is the development of new Quality Standards for Gender-Affirming Care for Gender Diverse people. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gkwZU-5W That work builds on the work for many years by @RainbowHealthOn and its partners, including the Alliance and many of our members, to educate and advocate for safer care for gender diverse people across our entire health system. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/ezKqYbh6 In the last 2 years, the Alliance and our members have contributed to resources to make cancer screening more accessible to gender diverse people. Here's more on that work, and a list of other resources to support taking action in your organization: https://lnkd.in/g2EutR2Z #TDOR #TransDayofRemembrance #TransHealth #2SLGBTQHealth #TransRightsAreHumanRights

March 31 is Transgender Day of Visibility! Did you know that more than 20% of trans and gender nonconforming people experience homelessness at least once in their lives, with disproportionate representation in unsheltered homelessness? Want to create a welcoming environment for transgender and nonbinary clients at your #MedicalRespite program? Are you curious how other programs support gender affirmation for staff and clients? Join the National Health Care for the Homeless Council and the National Institute for Medical Respite Care on April 8 at 1 p.m. CDT for a discussion on promising practices for gender-affirming medical respite care. Drawing from site visits and interviews with providers and consumers in the field, panelists will discuss common challenges respite programs face in providing gender-affirming care to trans and non-binary clients and offer promising practices to promote gender-inclusivity. The need to enhance supports and organizational capacity for the Transgender and Gender Diverse (TGD) community is dire and urgent. Across Illinois, many individuals who are transgender, gender diverse, non-binary, and part of the LGBTQIA+ community are suffering due to environmental stress factors such as discrimination, stigma, violence, and harassment, along with the lack of access to fundamental resources such as gender affirming care. IDHS and the Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago are seeking proposals from eligible organizations in IDHS Region 2 (link below) to participate in the IDHS Transgender and Gender Diverse Wellness and Equity Program. Participating organizations will increase their capacity to provide culturally and/or medically competent gender-affirming psychosocial, psychological, or behavioral health support to transgender, gender diverse, and LGBTQIA+ populations in Illinois. We recommend that interested candidates attend the Bidder’s Conference on Friday, November 15, 2024, via Zoom. The TGD Wellness NOFO is due by December 6, 2024. For more information about the bidder’s conference and NOFO, visit: https://lnkd.in/emUXAm3h #TGDWellness #TheFutureIsInclusive #GenderAffirmingCare

The lack of compassion towards transgender patients from right-wing politicians is alarming. Despite available data suggesting that 0.6 percent of the adult population is transgender, the GOP has been dismissive of the impact gender dysphoria has on patients. It is important to note that these people are human beings who experience adverse impacts. Even though the prevalence of transgender individuals depends on the definition, studies indicate a prevalence of approximately 871 per 100,000 people. It's time for politicians to show empathy towards their constituents and support gender-affirming medical care. #TransRightsAreHumanRights

🌟 New Study: Lesbian and Bisexual Women Face Higher Mortality Rates 🌟 👭 A recent study by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health reveals startling statistics: Lesbian and bisexual women die significantly earlier than heterosexual women. According to the study published in JAMA and covered by multiple news outlets: 🔹 On average, sexual minority women died 26% sooner than heterosexual women. 🔹 Bisexual women died 37% sooner, while lesbian women died 20% sooner than their heterosexual counterparts. 🔹 These disparities are attributed to chronic stress and discrimination, leading to unhealthy coping mechanisms and preventable health issues. Sarah McKetta, lead author of the study, emphasizes the urgent need to address these inequities, especially given the hostile policy climate towards LGBTQ people in the U.S. 🌈The first step for taking action is understanding the challenges queer women face. At HAQ we seek to gather health practitioners and researchers to gather evidence-based community-sourced solutions to those disheartening inequities. 🔗 Read more about the study https://lnkd.in/etq-piYu. #HealthEquity #LGBTQHealth #PublicHealth #InclusionMatters Katya Veleva Dr Steven Maxwell

Today is International Transgender Day of Visibility 🏳️⚧ This day recognizes the struggles and achievements of the fight for gender equity by transgender and non-binary individuals. It is imperative that allies understand and join this fight to resist the oppression this community faces for simply being themselves. Rates of body dissatisfaction rated by transgender youth were reported at a staggering 93% in the Jan 2023 survey conducted by @trevorproject, and their Feb 2022 survey showed that 2SLGBTQIA+ youth who were diagnosed with an eating disorder reported nearly 4x the risk of attempting suicide in the past year vs. those who were not. It is critical to create safe spaces for trans and nonbinary youth to seek support. Care providers must raise their cultural competency in all aspects of trans identities – particularly in understanding the ways eating disorders present, and their underlying causes – to aid in early detection and intervention.
