What can a basketball legend 🏀 teach us about running a #startup?   Last week, CEO Josh Levy was in #AustinTX at the Ironspring Ventures Annual General Meeting (Ironspring is one of our main investors, and we consider Adam Bridgman, Colleen Konetzke, Ty Findley, Peter J. Holt, Stephanie Volk and their team to be partners ✨ ).   There was a great network of built-world stakeholders in attendance from The Haskell Company, Zachry Group, HENSEL PHELPS, DPR Construction, HOLT CAT, Trimble Inc. and more, including Scott Wolfe, Hamzah Shanbari, Andrew Zukoski, Ranjeet Gadhoke, Ankoor Amin, Siavash Mohseni, Kaushal Diwan, Leah Royalty, Chris Stern and Meg Paulus, but there was another special guest in attendance as well… basketball legend Manu Ginobili. 🌟 Manu is a four-time NBA champion, Olympic gold medalist and a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame. He played 23 seasons professionally including in Italy and Argentina before joining the NBA. While playing with the San Antonio Spurs for more than 16 years, the team became a dynasty, but Manu had an unconventional situation... He came off the bench rather than start, despite being an all-star caliber player. How did this happen? A major highlight of #SKO2024 was our keynote from Larry Fitzgerald Jr. Most know him as one of the best NFL wide receivers of all time, but we got to know Larry as an investor, philanthropist, board member and human. He is truly one of the most thoughtful and genuine people I have ever met. Here are some of my takeaways from our conversation: + Know your sources of motivation. Do you play for yourself, or do you play for your team and all those who support you? + Consistent and thorough preparation is a major competitive advantage.  + Feedback is a critical ingredient to mastering any craft, but you have to want it. Make seeking out feedback from everyone around you a habit. + Success isn’t always measured by your individual wins but rather by the day-in and day-out tasks you do to build sustainable habits and growth.  + Always stay humble. No amount of success will ever give us the right to treat others poorly. Ok, one more football analogy. The day following drumming by an opponent, we had the benefit of watching the films of the game. To see what we did and didn't do, where the game was lost, and how our contributions could have changed the outcome. I still try to "watch the films", today. Failure, or at least coming up short, is more common than outright success. The value that can be gained by reflection and consideration prepares us for the next challenge. Embedded within the experience when we fail to reach the summit are opportunities to successfully mine the lessons and tools needed for the next attempt at the great ascent. #Teamwork #RoadtoSuccess #Experience #Challenge #Innovation
