If students choose to pursue a competitive summer program, it is important that they compile application materials well in advance of the time-sensitive fall and winter deadlines. Most of our students are already deep into writing their selective summer applications. Selective summer programs carry real weight in college applications (unlike pay-to-play programs). These programs offer three key advantages: 1. Stack evidence in key academic areas 2. Build meaningful expertise in specific fields 3. Two small gestures that can encourage graduate students. 1. If you read a paper by a grad student and liked it then emailing them why and how you liked it. This is how I met several senior people when I was a grad student. I gained so much confidence from their comments. 2. If you go to a conference you may consider making yourself available for a couple of time slots for grad students. You can buy them coffee or tea and discuss their research or job market strategy. Again, several senior people have done this for me. It made a huge difference. I always believe that being nice is an underappreciated super power in academia. Also, this is not service so not time-consuming. It's just a small gesture that signals newcomers that you are doing good and belong here.
