🌍 Why culture & heritage must be cherished in the pursuit of sustainability? Let me tell you and also like to share a digital service development project I had an honour to be part of. We've forgotten to bring cultural heritage and national treasures as part of the sustainability conversations. They anchor us to our roots, shape our identities, and embody values that have endured across generations and also show us what we don't want to witness in the future. Investing in heritage isn’t just about preserving the past, it’s about innovating for the future 🌎. Digital development plays a crucial role in helping heritage organisations create value in resource-efficient ways, enabling more people to connect with history, making culture accessible, interactive, and engaging across borders. I had the privilege of working with the Museovirasto - Finnish Heritage Agency, an inspiring team lead by Maija Ekosaari and UX wizard, Vitali Gusatinsky from Fraktio. Together, in a multidisciplinary team, we developed a digital, customer-centered service concept that not only preserves but also enhances cultural engagement for diverse audiences. The agency's commitment and innovation showed firsthand how digital tools can bring sustainability and accessibility to cultural heritage in transformative ways. 14 years ago, I decided to become an architect who never builds. 👷♂️ I dived headlong into a world of heritage, conservation, and revitalisation, advocating for the adaptive reuse of our historic buildings 🏯 and the rejuvenation of underserved communities. 💒 This ambition led me to organisations ranging from government agencies to academic settings, from social-driven design practices, and more recently, to embark on a sojourn to craft stories and envision possibilities for OLD places in various Asian cities. When the opportunity to work at Arup came, it felt like my life plot has gone off-tangent. 🤯 Why? Because Arup is known for innovative engineering solutions that have shaped iconic structures worldwide from Sydney Opera House to Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands. For those in the built industries, we know Arup is the troubleshooter one turns to realise NEW designs. 🛠 NEW definitely feels incoherent to someone who loves the OLD. 😵💫 Yet after a week as Arup’s Research Lead in the East Asia region, I am glad to say my new role is not a divergence from what I had pursued but instead an intersection of how my skills could expand in different trajectories: ❤️🔥 Arup University - where I am part of a global team, allows me to remain curious about the world and help colleagues quench their need for ideas and knowledge. ❤️🔥 Writing remains central to my work – I help demystify dense engineer speak and present knowledge and ideas in clear, concise language. ❤️🔥 “Conserving” is not a bad word – in fact, it is one of the key strategies to achieving Arup's net-zero targets. ❤️🔥 There are all sorts of learning resources on topics ranging from climate resilience to transport planning, driven by expert and enthusiastic colleagues who form communities of practice known as Skills Networks. 🚀 09 Days to 2025: Stepping into Industry Involvement 2024 marked not just the first year of running my own firm—but also my first year as a corporate member of [PAM] Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia - Malaysian Institute of Architects What started as a way to stay connected with the architectural community quickly turned into something bigger. I found myself diving into not one, but four committees—each offering new insights, challenges, and a chance to contribute in ways I never imagined: 🔹 Social, Community & Responsibility (SCR) + Diversity, Equality & Inclusion (DEI) – Pushing for inclusivity and expanding architecture’s role in shaping communities. 🔹 Professional Practice (PPC) – Diving into the evolving landscape of practice standards and professional growth. 🔹 Promotion of Profession (POP) – Amplifying the voice of architects and increasing public awareness of our role. 🔹 ADR Education Development – Exploring how alternative dispute resolution can shape the industry’s future. What Surprised Me Most? I never expected how much these roles would shift my perspective—not just on architecture, but on the bigger picture of how we, as architects, can actively shape the profession from within. Each committee reminded me of one thing: 🔑 We need more voices. Our profession grows stronger when more people engage, collaborate, and step forward to take part in the conversations shaping our industry. Whether it’s through community outreach, advocacy, or professional development—there’s space for everyone to contribute. A Call to Action: Joining PAM this year showed me that architecture isn’t just about design and construction—it’s about people, advocacy, and progress. And for that progress to continue, we need more hands on deck. If you’ve been thinking about getting involved, this is your sign to do it. An interesting post from Katherine Thornton at the World Cities Culture Forum on Creative Land Trusts and the City of Sydney. The only bit I take issue with is "In research commissioned by the City of Sydney..." Nearly all of our research was done in-house, not commissioned. I mention this in case there are other local government researchers trying to link cultural and built environment policies. I know there's not many of us, so if you are in that boat I'm more than willing to share our methodology and the data sources. Most of this work can be done with commonly available data, Excel, and the unique personality defects inherent to a career in research. All members of the C&D "dream team" (yes this how this team refers to itself without false modesty) exhibit these qualities. And i am blessed enough to be a member of this cohort. One year earlier , this team has grown and got richer with a new gem, a young technician who has all the qualities i have listed above 👆. Her team members and manager escorted her from her desk in the technical department to her desk in the designers' square just like a princess (a bride maybe 🙄). But litteraly , i mean that litterally. So we saw each one of them carrying stuff like Cactus 🌵, flower pot🌻, desk vacuum mini-machine, frames , candle , perfume, colourful notebooks, pink pink pink accessories .... That scene would say a lot about how precious she is and how great her previous team is. (I won't comment on the stuff she brought with her someone might post a close picture of my desk 🫣). Much older (in term of age) basic logic says that i should be mentoring / shadowing her, instead I found her blowing my mind at so many occasions with her creativity , her kindness, her technicality, her artistic sensitivity, her EMPATHY.. Today i pay tribute to you PRETTY for being our pride in this incubator called #SMME for your achievement. For having worked in silence and managed to maintain the balance between your professional duties and your academic studies and for being ranked fourth on your promotion.
