Over the course of the last seven days on Bunkerspot, we have heard from Veson Nautical Valuation Analyst, Oliver Kirkham, on how the global #bulker fleet has continued to slow steam in 2024 despite a strong market. In an interview with Senior Editor, Ariane Morrissey, Kirkham suggested that the latest regulation on greenhouse gas emissions is prompting improvements in operational #efficiency. Owners and operators of #LNG-fuelled tonnage in the Pacific Northwest saw their fuelling options expanded after Canada’s Seaspan Energy was awarded the first LNG bunkering accreditation to be issued by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. With the accreditation, the Canadian company is authorised to conduct ship-to-ship LNG fuelling operations for vessels calling the Port of Vancouver. It was not only ocean-going LNG-fuelled vessel operators that saw their bunkering options increase. On Monday, Shell announced it had taken delivery of its chartered Energy Stockholm, said to be Europe’s largest inland LNG #bunkerbarge. Owned by LNG SHIPPING S.P.A., the joint venture between Victrol and Groupe SOGESTRAN, the 8,000 cbm vessel, which completed its first loading operation at the Gate terminal B.V. in #Rotterdam, will be operating in Zeebrugge, Antwerp, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam A.P. Moller - Maersk – which has already taken delivery of several dual-fuel #methanol newbuild containerships – announced that its Maersk Halifax became the first large #containership to be converted into a dual-fuel vessel able to operate on methanol, following an 88-day retrofit operation at the Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard in China. In other news, in a move aimed at ‘preparing for future growth’ and responding to ‘an increasingly complex market’, Bunker Holding A/S announced a restructuring of its Executive Management and a separation of its #sales and #operations divisions; bunker volumes in #Panama reached a post-pandemic high in October; and a new report from the SASHA Coalition found that prioritising #efuels over other alternative marine fuels will reduce pressure on natural habitats and land demand and better support the European Union’s Biodiversity Strategy. This week on Bunkerspot, we were in the key bunker hub of #Panama for the 2024 edition of Maritime Week Americas #MWA24. The importance of building global #alliances to accelerate the transition to #renewable #energies and Panama’s potential as a pivotal player in the shift to green #shipping were key themes in the speeches of the Dutch and British ambassadors to Panama delivered at the opening of the event. From one strategic bunker hub to another - we were in the Dutch capital to speak with Henri van der Weide, Policy Advisor, Harbour Master Division, Port of #Amsterdam, who said it expects to launch one of the world’s first dynamic bunker maps for #alternativefuels before the end of the year. We also caught up with SGMF - Leading safe maritime decarbonisation’s Memberships and Communications Manager, Claudia Beumer, to reflect on her first months in the job and discuss what needs to be done to ensure the maritime industry is prepared for the transition to new fuels. The number of proposed #greencorridors continues to grow. This week, renewable energy and maritime specialist NatPower Marine and UK port operator Peel Ports Group Group unveiled plans to establish what they say will be the first green shipping corridors between #Ireland and the #UK. In other news, Tuomas Riski, co-founder of the rotor sail company Norsepower, has resigned as CEO and has been succeeded in the role by Heikki Pöntynenöntynen; TFG Marine reported the first #LNG refuelling of its dual-fuel bunker vessel MT Diligence in Jurong Port, #Singapore; and the Proman Stena Bulk joint venture announced that the #methanol dual-fuelled Stena Prosperous, the last of six vessels in the venture’s joint fleet, was formally named in a ceremony at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre in Singapore. The Montney is a prolific basin capable of supporting a major international NGL export hub. This virtuous cycle could significantly boost activity on the Pacific coast, establishing it as a premier energy shipping hub.

In other news, #energy major Chevron announced that it is chartering its first hybrid #electric bunker tanker, the Marine Dynamo, in Singapore; class society DNV said that although March had been a ‘quiet month’ for the ordering of alternative fuelled vessels - five new orders were confirmed - the overall trend ‘remains strong’; and the Sea Cargo Charter – the initiative set up four years ago to create a baseline for assessing and disclosing the #climate alignment of chartering activities – announced that it is expanding its scope to ‘fully include #shipowners’.
