Creating #WorldFieldEpidemiologyDay (September 7) is the most meaningful thing I’ve done in my career so far. Now in its 4th year, this campaign aims to highlight the invaluable contributions of field epidemiologists to the health of their communities worldwide. Field epis are unsung heroes in public health, working in every country on every health issue imaginable, sometimes in challenging or dangerous environments. Often, their work is not well understood (even in the field of public health), and they may not have a clear career path before them after finishing their training. And yet, their work is critical to identifying and stopping outbreaks before they devastate communities. I’m glad to see that, 4 years into the campaign, more individuals than ever have been inspired to post and share about their work and personal stories. The theme of this year’s campaign centers on the importance of collaboration. I want to acknowledge that the development of World Field Epidemiology Day was, itself, a successful collaboration. While I was a member of the TEPHINET team, I had the idea, got buy-in from leadership at TEPHINET Secretariat, The Task Force for Global Health, Inc., and our close partners and funders at CDC. As we worked together to make the campaign a reality, we sought input from a network of ~80 field epidemiology training programs around the world, the regional networks that support them, and dozens of orgs that signed up as official partners of the campaign in its very first year. And then, of course, there was my own team, TEPHINET’s comms and events team, whose amazing members understood the spirit of the whole thing right away, and worked hard to make it a success. In the wake of the pandemic, the campaign felt even more relevant and meaningful. On the first #WorldFieldEpidemiologyDay in 2021, I was so excited to see a tweet from Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus that I printed it out and taped it to my office wall. Yes, it feels incredible to see high-profile public health figures and organizations participating in your fledgling campaign, but the real test of whether this was a meaningful endeavor was whether actual field epidemiologists would care. It has therefore been extremely gratifying to see individuals using the opportunity of World Field Epidemiology Day to share more about themselves and their work. You are all making a positive difference in the world, and you deserve to feel seen. Great work is often personal, and this was no different. While getting to know the field epis we worked with at TEPHINET, I had a sense that I’d found a community of kindred spirits. I was motivated to make this idea a success because I wanted to honor people I’d come to genuinely care about. Thanks to the members of the TEPHINET team who keep this campaign going. (Of all the posts made yesterday, I decided to share CDC’s because there’s something pleasantly full-circle about your current employer participating in something you created!)

The 2024 Epidemiology Capacity Assessment from Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists and the Big Cities Health Coalition outline the unmet workforce and capacity needs in applied epidemiology across U.S. state, territorial, and large urban health departments. The ability of the U.S. public health system to protect us from current and emerging health threats is at stake.
