Want to learn more about the role of applied #epidemiology in #biodefense, #healthsecurity and public health #preparedness? Check out this commentary in Health Security, from myself, Elizabeth R. Daly, DrPH, MPH, and Jessica Arrazola, that includes recommendations to improve threat agnostic public health surveillance capacity. "Strategies aimed at developing and enhancing epidemiology and surveillance capacity in US public health agencies to support threat agnostic detection and response are urgently needed to ensure readiness for future public health threats. Taking a threat agnostic approach to biodefense is to approach biodefense through the lens of applied epidemiology."

This is a critical #CSTE report to read! There are currently 5706 Epidemiologists in State Health Departments. With anticipated cuts, we will lose an additional 1020, or nearly 1 in 5 epidemiologists. When surveyed, State Health Departments identified a need for an additional 2537 epidemiologists. With a host of emerging infectious diseases, environmental events, and higher chronic disease prevalence, this is not the time to have a diminished workforce!
Our latest blog takes a closer look at #CSTE and Big Cities Health Coalition’s 2024 Epidemiology Capacity Assessment (ECA). Learn why we’re sounding the alarm on the current state of the #epi workforce and what we need to carry out #PublicHealth essential services. As always, the lessons learned from the ECA are paramount to CSTE’s outreach and education efforts towards policymakers. For example, data from past ECAs have been shared as testimony in Congressional hearings to support greater funding for epidemiologists in public health. The 2024 Epidemiology Capacity Assessment from Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists and the Big Cities Health Coalition outline the unmet workforce and capacity needs in applied epidemiology across U.S. state, territorial, and large urban health departments. The ability of the U.S. public health system to protect us from current and emerging health threats is at stake. The capacity to deliver essential epidemiology public health services for the U.S. has declined — and is in danger of declining further due to lack of sustained federal funding, especially with the end of COVID-19 funding.
