How can we create an unforgettable holiday for someone who is visually impaired? That’s a question my team and I have been thinking about a lot these past few months. We have many fantastic accessible activities and adventure experiences for people with various disabilities, ranging from reduced mobility to conditions such as cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. What distinguishes visually impaired or totally blind people from others is obviously their loss of sight. In most cases, their other senses are still intact – or even sharper than those who can see. Since taking them out to enjoy the views is not an option, my team member Sina and I have put together a special Sensory Programme. It’s a complete itinerary for blind holiday guests that includes activities addressing all the other four senses – a different one each day. For example, Day 1 could include a visit to a salt extraction plant with a guided tour and salt tasting or optional beer tasting (brewed with salt). On Day 2, you could visit an animal sanctuary in the middle of the volcanic desert and interact with various friendly animals. And on Day 3, you could make your own “pellas” (balls or dumplings made from gofio mixed with water, milk, honey or other ingredients) at an old traditional Canarian gofio (a traditional Canarian flour made from roasted grains) mill. Other activities could include: 🐴 Horse-riding 🐬 Swimming with dolphins 🧼 Making your own handmade bath salt that feels and smells wonderful 🛁 Relaxing in different thermal baths, including a Roman bath with music therapy, or the active pool with waterfalls, bubble chairs, and hydromassage beds.
