Join us as Kent State’s KSU Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative hosts Brett KenCairn for his lecture "Climate Action as if the Earth Mattered: Restoring Living Systems as the Essential Foundation to Solving the Polycrises we Face" in-person at the CUDC and livestream on Zoom Friday, Sept 27 from 12 PM - 1 PM. Zoom link: https://lnkd.in/gdv4xt89 We have known since the early 1970s that there were two fundamental causes of climate destabilization—fossil fuel combustion and land degradation. Over the past several decades, the role of land degradation has been largely forgotten in the focus on carbon accounting and energy systems change. Current climate action strategies will inevitably fail unless we reestablish a global-scale focus on restoring the more than 70% of the Earth’s living systems that have been deeply degraded—both in natural, working and urban lands. The good news is that we have examples of large-scale initiatives of this sort that can achieve remarkable regenerative results in the scale of just a few decades. In this talk, we will walk through the limitations to current climate action approaches and outline a broader strategy that can serve as the foundation for both climate stabilization (and a number of other aspects of the “polycrisis”) and a community redevelopment strategy that can stabilize both urban and rural communities both here and abroad. #kentstate #caed #lecture

How can cities combat climate risks, foster biodiversity, and promote well-being while ensuring financial feasibility? The Islington Council and our team are paving the way—quite literally—by converting unused dead end streets into vibrant “pocket parks.” Through a groundbreaking blended financing framework, this initiative is more than just urban greening; it's a model for sustainable, community-focused urban transformation. With 10 parks underway and over 250 potential sites identified, the project demonstrates how public-private partnerships can deliver measurable social, environmental, and economic benefits. 💡 Did you know? These parks help mitigate urban heat islands, reduce stormwater runoff, and even lower healthcare costs—all while fostering a sense of community. Today I had the opportunity to attend the final segment of the H-GAC Livable Centers Series where we explored community-conscious planning practices specifically targeting transportation, environmental, and social equity. One of the presenters, said it best, “To a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” This reminds us as urban planners to avoid one-size-fits-all solutions. Each community has its own unique challenges, and we must take a holistic approach, considering everything from transportation and housing to public spaces, environmental impact, and social equity. Prioritizing just one aspect, such as economic growth or car-centric infrastructure, can mean missing out on other critical factors like walkability or sustainability. This event was a valuable reminder to bring a diverse set of tools and perspectives to the table. Our goal should always be to create inclusive, sustainable, and livable communities that benefit both current residents and future generations. A huge thank you to HGAC, Jose Cantu, and Sarai Osorio for hosting this insightful series! #livablecenters #multimodaltransportation #environmentalequity #socialequity #HGAC #urbanplanning #communityandurbanplanning

I've thought a lot about what makes a great city: (And it’s not just skyscrapers and highways.) → It’s cities that care about their people and their future. As we look toward 2025, here’s how governments can create sustainable, inclusive cities: 1️⃣ Resilience: Develop infrastructure that can withstand natural disasters. 2️⃣ Climate-Smart Policies: Prioritize green spaces, renewable energy, and efficient public transport. 3️⃣ Social Equity: Ensure affordable housing and equal opportunities for all citizens. 4️⃣ Community Participation: Involve locals in decision-making to meet real needs. 5️⃣ Data-Driven Planning: Use technology to track and solve urban issues effectively. 6️⃣ Accountability: Set measurable goals and deliver on promises. These principles aren’t just ideas—they’re necessities. A city isn’t truly great unless it works for everyone. Master these principles → and we’ll build cities that future generations will thank us for. What do you think should be a priority for urban development in 2025?
