For #OneHealthDay, I took a moment to reflect on what the future of our conservation efforts needs to entail, a future that requires a sustainable and dynamic approach alongside an evolving perspective to meet the urgency of the biodiversity crisis. At the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, we are focusing on the inextricable connection of the health of wildlife, people, and the ecosystems we share – because a threat to nature is inherently a threat to us all. Preventing species from going extinct is crucial to protecting and restoring biodiversity, but there is more we can do. Across the globe, humanity relies on wildlife and biodiversity resources to meet its needs: food, fuel, medicine and even housing. Biodiversity is essential because it provides a wide range of plants, animals, and microorganisms that form the basis of many food, medicinal, and other resources essential for our survival and well-being. In order for us to enjoy the benefits and beauty that nature provides to humanity and the planet, many people are working together to ensure that ecosystems can thrive and that plant and animal species can continue to exist. Currently, over one million species are endangered, emphasizing the need for immediate action to preserve our natural ecosystems, which are vital for our economy and quality of life. I encourage you to engage in this vital cause today and every day. When we reflect, do we also do a bit of reflexive monitoring of our and others actions? My reflections are: - it's ok to fail as long as we learn from each failure and iteratively improve the next attempt. If we are afraid of failure, we'd never try to do nature- based solutions to make the world a better place. - Understand what the problem is that you are trying to solve and therefore what questions you need to ask to identify what data you need to help you move forward, benchmark or understand where you are. - data should be spatial and visual. Everything is happening somewhere in the world. - collaboration and co-production is the way forward . Working with communities, not doing things to them - it's about co benefits, positive benefits for social cohesion ( habitats and human), health and wellbeing ( human and habitat), environmental, economic and biodiversity. All at the same time in the same place. So do no harm - economic benefits are about so much more than bricks and mortar/ jobs created/ inward investment. But we don't place an economic value on the other things or account for them properly. - Good spatial planning is about balancing the land and building assets for the public good, environmental good and supporting a balanced planet. If we all try a little bit harder to understand our world, really understand our world.....maybe we can support it, to support us just a little bit longer

Even when you know the damage that is happening to wildlife populations around the world stories like this are still horrible to see. Humans and our activities are undoubtedly the cause of this decline. As a species I believe we need to very urgently look at how we live in a sustainable balance with other species and what that really means in terms of both the size of the human population and also how we live. Celebrating World Wildlife Day is an initiative pioneered by the UN in order to prevent the loss of wildlife biodiversity. Creating awareness about preserving wildlife and biodiversity is another aim behind launching this initiative. According to sustainable development goal 15, we must strive for maintaining and protecting wildlife based resources as we highly depend on them for our own sustainability. Today, we swing into the heart of the jungle to celebrate #WorldChimpanzeeDay! Deep within Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary lies incredible moments of life, revealing not only the elusive #CrossRivergorillas, but also intelligent and socially fantastic chimpanzees. This landscape with it's rich tapestry of montane forests with diverse habitat types is a biodiversity treasure trove that is crucial for the survival of countless species. Chimpanzees, sharing 98% of human DNA, and listed as #endangered in the #IUCNRedList faces serious threats such as habitat loss, poaching, wildfires and diseases in their natural homes. Protecting this unique species is vital for preserving our planet's ecological balance and the health of our #ecosystem. As we celebrate World Chimpanzee Day, let's remember the importance of supporting the survival of #chimpanzees and safeguarding their habitats. Supporting #conservation initiatives, promote #sustainable conservation practices, and raising awareness will go along way to ensure the survival and maintenance of the delicate balance of our ecosystems for generations to come.
