A new report by Ember suggests that global power sector emissions may have peaked last year, marking a potential turning point as the world transitions from coal- and gas-fired generation to clean, renewable energy. The data was featured in Canary Media Inc.'s chart of the week and shows renewables reached a record milestone in 2023, generating 30% of the world's electricity. This surge is largely driven by the incredible growth of solar and wind power over the past decade. https://bit.ly/3V5RJxj #renewableenergy #cleantech #sustainability

🌍🔋 Good news! According to recent data, renewables accounted for a ground-breaking 30% of global electricity generation in 2023. 🎉 Solar and wind energy, in particular, are leading the charge in cleaning up the global power grid. This surge in clean generation helped slow the growth of fossil fuels by almost two-thirds over the last 10 years, according to energy analysis firm Ember’s “Global Electricity Review 2024.” It’s likely that enough clean energy progress has been made that power sector emissions will begin to fall from here, Ember writes. https://lnkd.in/daR5z9GX Canary Media Inc. As detailed in a recent The Wall Street Journal article, by 2030, renewables are projected to grow faster than energy demand, while fossil fuel usage is expected to peak then decline, accounting for only 58% of energy demand by 2050. Renewable energy generated a record-breaking 30% of global electricity with strong, stable growth in solar and wind power leading these efforts. This increase in clean energy helped slow the growth in fossil fuels by two-thirds over the last ten years. This milestone marks the growing importance of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower in meeting the world's energy needs while reducing carbon emissions. 🌎☀️ Read more from Canary Media Inc.: https://lnkd.in/daR5z9GX

The evolution of renewables in the energy landscape since the 2000s is truly remarkable. From primarily hydropower to the significant rise of solar and wind energy, it signifies a major shift towards cleaner and more sustainable sources of electricity generation. This transition not only reflects technological advancements but also increasing awareness of the environmental impact of traditional energy sources like coal and oil. It is also worth noting that the trend of Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) during the same period has followed a similar trajectory, albeit with some nuances. Initially, solar and wind energy faced challenges due to higher LCOE compared to conventional sources. However, as technology improved and economies of scale kicked in, the LCOE of renewables has steadily declined. This decline has been particularly dramatic in the case of solar energy, where costs have plummeted over the past couple of decades, making it increasingly competitive with fossil fuels. The decreasing LCOE of renewables has played a pivotal role in their rapid adoption worldwide. Governments, businesses, and consumers are increasingly attracted to renewables not only for their environmental benefits but also for their economic viability. As solar and wind energy continue to become more cost-effective, it's likely that their share of global electricity generation will continue to grow, further accelerating the transition towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
Back in 2000, renewables — almost entirely hydropower — accounted for 19 percent of global electricity generation. But in the decades since, solar and wind have burst onto the scene and gone from virtually zero to almost half of the clean energy total.

Cool news today, 30% of the global energy production was coming from renewables in 2023, thanks notably to an astounding +23% solar growth! Many geographies need to increase their solar energy generation for the middle of the day, but to go over 50% in the next years, batteries, transmission of energy across grids and increasing the other complementary renewable energies (wind, geothermal, hydro, etc) need to pick up too.
