On National Truth and Reconciliation Day, I reaffirm my commitment as a person and as a public servant to listening, learning, and taking action in the spirit of reconciliation and self-determination for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. As part of the recent Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (#SPOR) Refresh engagement process, our team was privileged to hear from Indigenous scholars and community members who have been leading #SPOR-funded research. We heard about how #SPOR (and health research more broadly) can continue to accelerate First Nations, Inuit, and Métis self-determination in health research by: - Investing in education, training, and capacity building - Developing longer-term, sustainable inclusive, transparent, flexible, and equitable funding models - Ensuring funded research is driven by Indigenous communities' priorities And so much more. To learn about what we heard about barriers and challenges for Indigenous self-determination in health research, proposed solutions, and some of the great work that was highlighted by the Indigenous scholars and community members we spoke with, check out the SPOR Refresh summary report, pages 16-24: https://www.naphro.ca/spor #Truthandreconciliation #IndigenousHealthResearch #SPOR #SRAP

¨Adult Physical Inactivity Levels Reach All-Time High.¨ The World Health Organization released it`s latest physical activity data and the picture is getting worse. In a joint statement from the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI), the sporting goods sector is coming together to fight against this trend. However, a cross-industrial approach is needed to solve this issue. We need politicians to prioritize human infrastructure in urban areas. Walking, running, cycling should not be acts of privilege, but without basic things like sidewalks and streetlights, these become dangerous activities. We need the places outside of our homes to inspire and facilitate active mobility - for recreation, health or simply to get to work. Humans do not desire to be sedentary. The places we design around and the societal values we elevate make even the most accessible activity a challenge. #fitness #mobility #cycling #infrastructure #vc24 #cyclingsafety #who #wfsgi #urbaninfrastructure https://lnkd.in/eicAVPUp

This report highlights the importance and need for a prevention focus to keep people healthy and well, and one of the most cost effective and fun ways is to be physically active. In light of these findings, WHO is calling on countries to strengthen their policy implementation to promote and enable physical activity through grassroots and community sport and active recreation and transport (walking, cycling and use of public transport), among other measures. We need systematic change. We also need to listen to the community, understand thier needs, thier challenges and work with them to design solutions that they lead. Collaborative cross sector efforts where we leave egos at the door are needed. #stayactive #sportmanawatu

Outreach care has long been used in Canada to address limited access to specialist care in rural settings, but little research has been done on the experiences of specialist physicians providing these services. A recently published study in PLOS ONE, produced by members of RCCbc's RSON team, aims to understand specialists’ motivation for engaging in outreach work, their perceptions of the quality of care at their rural outreach hospital, and the supports they receive. Survey responses from outreach specialists at rural hospitals found primarily altruistic motives for engaging in this work, and for the most part, positive experiences in rural hospitals. The feedback gathered also provides direction in how to strengthen network models of care, indicating that specialists can be better supported through investment in infrastructure and health human resources. 🔗 Read the publication in full: https://lnkd.in/gdBGFQTQ Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia #healthcareresearch #ruralhealthcare

What a comprehensive discussion on medical assistance in dying in Quebec. Definitely worthwhile to listen to, and to share with my students in OT and PT. Merci Pier-Luc Turcotte, Ph.D.!!!
On #WorldTBDay, I would like to recognize everyone with whom I’ve had the chance of working on this critical #PublicHealth and #GlobalHealth issue! Our incredible public health team at the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services, which works tirelessly day after day to try to eliminate #Tuberculosis in the region despite the incredible challenges. The incidence of TB in Nunavik is more than 100 times higher than in the rest of the country; access to care is much more complex considering that the resources needed for the diagnosis and treatment of TB are not always available in the community where people are; and going out of one’s community means taking a plane! Some of our most impactful work in the long run will likely be our efforts to try to bring decisions closer to the affected population and create approaches for dealing with TB that are community-led. To achieve this, we invest a lot of efforts in creating safe working environments, recruiting local staff and supporting them in their work, as well as finding new and innovative ways for getting inputs from all the stakeholders in those public health programs! The Inuulitsivik Health Centre and Ungava Tulattavik Health Center have had to deploy complex interventions and special services orders of magnitude beyond the scope of other healthcare institution in the province all the while managing the many health priorities in the region and incredible resources constraints which are very different than those faced by other healthcare organizations. Our TB team in Nunavik: Dominique Lavallee, Jessika Huard, Valérie Messier, Vannessa Remi, Christina Santella, Tatiana Solodovnikova, Glenda Sandy, Pitsulala Lyta, Marine Cotting, Andreanne Dumas, Aurélie Heurtebize, Jessica Trahan, Marie-Neige Dion, Pascale Desjardins, Pierre Tuinstra, Vanessa Bérubé, Tommy Daigle, Gabrielle Plourde, Murielle Mwanza, Amélie Drolet, Genevieve Auclair, Gabriel Chouinard, Margaret May Raymond, Céline Signor, Marie Rochette. Health center partners: Aleasha Naggyah, Vanessa Dubois, Laken Tiller, Dominic Pelland, Audrey Laberge, Michael Chouinard. The TB collaborators at McGill University: Faiz Khan, Marcel Behr, Jonathon Campbell, Madhukar Pai. Stop TB Canada folks that I’ve had a chance to meet in recent months: Leigh Raithby, Lena Faust, Madlen Nash, Tina Campbell, Monica Shandal (she/her), Daphne Tooktoo, Adam R Houston. The colleagues at World Health Organization with whom I’ve had the pleasure of working Tereza Kasaeva, Hannah Monica Yesudian Dias, Yi Wang, Anna Stukalova. And sorry to everyone whose name I can’t find on LinkedIn, and everyone with whom I don’t work directly – this is a very shortened list! #EndTB #WorldTBDay #PublicHealth #GlobalHealth #Epidemiology #UHC
