🌎🗺️ 🌱NEW on Forbes. Starting a few COP16 Colombia reflections with a solution-led story... From both inside and outside of the negotiating hall in Cali, mapping, monitoring, and reporting on ecosystems have been a focal point for governments, businesses, and other stakeholder groups to make progress in implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework and NBSAPs. The Group on Earth Observations (GEO), a partnership of more than 100 national governments and over 150 participating organizations, launched the official proof of concept for the Global Ecosystems Atlas, an open-access resource for mapping and monitoring ecosystems. With high-profile endorsers and partners, including the UN Environment Programme, the CBD, Esri and the Nature Positive Initiative, the Atlas combines existing and new maps with AI, earth observation technology and field data to plug current knowledge gaps. During the launch event on the 30th of October, Ministers from the Maldives, South Africa, Norway and Mozambique endorsed the value of the Atlas. The Maldives has already participated in an accelerator for the Atlas and Norway pledged $2.5 million to support its development. The article explores:  🗺️ How countries most vulnerable to climate change & nature loss can use the Atlas  🗺️ The opportunity to serve as a tool for businesses who have set Science Based Targets for Nature 🗺️ The need to scale funding  🗺️ How the Atlas represents a story of cross-sector collaboration  🗺️ The role of AI & open data to ensure its use is democratic to all, especially countries in the Global South Featuring comments from the brilliant Yana Gevorgyan, Secretariat Director of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and Ted Schmitt, Senior Director of Conservation for Ai2.
