"The satellite Earth Observation (EO) industry has seen huge advances in technologies in recent years. As the fight against climate change becomes ever more real, the role of satellite companies will be ever more important. However, it is a crowded market, with many companies looking to carve out a niche... At the inaugural Earth Observation (EO) Summit in London in June, a number of speakers gave their thoughts on this market, with different perspectives on what needs to happen for this market to develop further." #satellitedata #earthobservation

🏆 The 3 nominees of this year's Pathways to Sustainability Award are known! A competition for the most innovative project that is #interdisciplinary in nature, involving #cocreation with stakeholders and leading to #societal #impact. On our conference day on 28 November with the theme #AtHomeConferenceUU the public will vote for the winning project. Get to know one of the three nominated projects! ✨ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 War destroys not only humans, but also the environment, and is a major obstacle for sustainability worldwide. Satellite imagery is critical in documenting the ecological impact of armed conflicts, showing damaged land, destroyed infrastructure, and many more. Using satellite imagery comes with risks. When practitioners overlook the complexities of conflict and environmental contexts, they may unintentionally expose sensitive information that can be exploited by military, criminal, commercial, or governmental actors. This misuse of data can result in severe ecological damage and intensify human suffering. The researchers have created new ethical guidelines and analytical tools to account for the ecological impact of war. This project will help minimize the ecological damage of war, balancing eco- and human-centric perspectives on conflict. This research is a collaboration between Universiteit Utrecht, PAX, NASA Lifelines Humanitarian Wayfinders Programme, Ariel Ozdemir, Thijs Jeursen

This is my complete presentation on The Next 10 years REPIC's 20th anniversary and AGM in London on July 9, 2024. Thanks to REPIC for sharing this presentation! #sustainability #greenfuture #thegoodfuture #publicthinker The Next 10 Years: Climate Change, AI, and the Future of Business and Economics In this presentation, I dive into the major changes and developments I anticipate over the next decade. Two monumental waves impacting our future are #climatechange which poses urgent challenges but also presents unprecedented business opportunities in green technology; and the rise of #artificialintelligence , transforming industries and everyday life. I present breakthrough innovations in battery technology and recycling, discuss the creation of new jobs in AI / IA, and the significant investments directed towards climate technology. The inevitable shift away from fossil fuels and the role of AI in automating routine tasks are highlighted. It's not the end of work, it's the end of routines. The talk also touches on the importance of foresight, the challenges of global collaboration, and the potential of emerging technologies like quantum computing and genetic engineering. The convergence of the digital, sustainability, and purpose revolutions is emphasized, along with the moral and ethical considerations of these developments. Ultimately, the discussion focuses on the need for sustainable capitalism, the changing job market, and the importance of independent human knowledge in a rapidly evolving world.

Policy Symposium | Space Resources Agência Espacial Portuguesa, Portugal space- "Developing an international legal framework to accommodate space resource use has become increasingly pressing as technological innovation accelerates. With this subject in mind, a set of speakers came together on the third day of the Policy Symposium (March 11 to 15), one of the preparatory events of the Management and Sustainability of Outer Space Activities Conference. Artemis Papathanassiou, from the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, moderated a session with Tanja Masson-Zwaan (Leiden University, Netherlands), Gerald (Jerry) Sanders (NASA, EUA), João Azevedo, (SPARC, Portugal) and Tomas Hrozensky (ESPI). The speakers agreed that in the mid-to short term, countries should start with a small set of principles or adaptative governance that reduces uncertainty and leverages points of convergence. During this process, it is essential to involve actors from other sectors. Furthermore, aspects such as considering space as a Global Commons and benefit-sharing mechanisms are highly relevant and will require deep reflection amongst all parties. "

At #IAC2024, I joined Mahhad Nayyer, Alessandra Gargiulo, Ksenia Ozkok, and Miles Lifson in a special session where we carried out an interdisciplinary dialogue to collectively define the meaning of space sustainability. We have our thoughts and we will publish them in the future, but I am keen to keep the discussion going and involve more people in it. What do you think is the definition of space sustainability?
