According to Ministry of Corporate Affairs data, nearly 5,000 startups recognized under the Startup India programme have shut down, representing about 3% of the 1.52 lakh entities recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade as of October 31. Maharashtra reported the highest number of closures (929), followed by Karnataka (644). These numbers remind of the inherent challenges in the startup ecosystem. While some ventures find extraordinary success, others face obstacles that lead to closures. However, every closure is a lesson and a stepping stone for future innovation. This year saw 25 startups drop off the list, 12 downgraded from gazelle to cheetah, and 10 promoted from cheetah to gazelle.
