Saudi Arabia's plans to build 11 new stadiums and refurbish four existing ones as part of its 2034 World Cup bid (for which it is the only bidder) have been unveiled. The stadiums look exciting and have a cutting edge design. But serious questions remain about whether or not Saudi Arabia should be allowed to host the event in light of the country's poor human rights record and the likelihood that the construction of the stadiums may involve forced or abused labour. Amnesty International's Stephen Cockburn has been heavily critical of the Saudi bid, arguing that the Cup could be blighted by 'forced labour, repression and discrimination' and that its response to human rights issues in its bid falls well short of the World Cup's standards. What do you think? Should Saudi Arabia be allowed to host the World Cup? #construction #engineering #architecture #worldcup #stadiums #worldcup2034 https://lnkd.in/gWufRy_u
