Stop Passing the Bugs around! A young promising teenager died because of rules? Or a young promising teenager died because you did not do enough? Yes, the current Badminton World Federation's on-court medical service regulations state that "if a player appeals to the umpire for medical assistance, the umpire must call the referee to the court by raising their right hand, provided the appeal is for a genuine injury or illness" But everyone at the venue could see that there was no way this young teenager could have raised his hand to appeal for help. No way. And it is therefore totally tasteless for the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) to use this regulation to try to explain why the medical team did not response in a timely fashion. This is simply passing the bug around. It is pushing responsibility. And for Indonesia to progress as a nation and to be seen as a country that wants to progress, this type of response should have been avoided. Because this type of response implies that Indonesian agencies have no common sense, that indonesian agencies will only follow rules and guidelines, even if it means people dying. This type of response also gives the whole world the impression that Indonesia is a backward country. This type of response has a negative effect on the image of Indonesia. Football here has been in the doldrums for far too long; we now struggle to beat the minnows in South East Asia, which were teams we used to gobble up for breakfast not too long ago. We are streets behind Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam, but not too long ago we used to compete with them on an almost equal footing. Let’s be realistic here. If we rely organically and include only local born players, we will only slide further down. The factors at play in football here (lack of interest, funding, a third tier league, the majority race not participating) will only bring football to its knees. We need to bring in naturalised citizens to help us address the decline in footballing standards.

Playing volleyball overseas in Beijing, China taught me one of the BEST lessons of my life! Imagine stepping into a tiny, kerosene-scented gym in Beijing, where the walls are so close to the court you can touch them. This was my reality when our team traveled to train with the Chinese National Volleyball Team. The contrast was stark: • Our plush Chicago facility: Air-conditioned, spacious, with cushioned SportCourt • Beijing gym: Cramped, exposed walls, broken bricks scattered about But here's where it gets interesting...The Chinese team? Unfazed. They attacked their warm-up with military precision – every stretch timed, every player perfectly positioned, moving in flawless unison. Their energy? Electric. The gym erupted with constant cheers and celebrations, creating an atmosphere that was both inspiring and intimidating. These world-class athletes had every reason to complain, yet their focus was laser-sharp: the game and their team were all that mattered. The takeaway? It's not about the conditions; it's about the MINDSET. I have attended anti-doping education seminars since I was in high school. My first drug test occurred when I was 16 at the Dunc Gray Velodrome in Sydney. I would have easily been subject to more than one hundred anti-doping tests over my career and have been on-and-off the whereabouts system where I had to account for my whereabouts for 1 hour a day, 365 days a year since 2010. I have always taken my anti-doping obligations seriously because I believed in an equal playing field and I understood the severe consequences — career ending consequences — if I did not. I hoped, and for the most part I believe, that my competitors did the same thing. The news that 23 Chinese swimmers tested positive in 2021, were not subject to any provisional suspensions and were permitted to compete at the Tokyo Olympic Games is, from an athletes perspective both distressing and disappointing. What this case shows is that there is a fundamental contradiction underlying the current functioning of the World Anti-Doping System. On the one hand, the World Anti-Doping Code (WADC) imposes a strict liability regime onto athletes if they return an adverse analytical finding but, on the other hand, WADA — the institution tasked with overseeing the WADC — can be extremely selective in its oversight of the WADC. As a former athlete who spent years rigorously ensuring that I complied with the WADC, and with many friends and colleagues who continue to be bound by these strict rules and regulations, I am concerned that what this contradiction means is that athletes are facing radically different anti-doping realities (and risks) depending on their geographical location. This is, quite simply, not fair. One of the fundamental principles of international sport is that athletes compete on an even playing field. This doesn't feel even. I am disappointed that the institutions who puport to protect athletes and fair sport have failed to do so. I respect that national anti-doping agencies like #USADA and #UKAD have made public statements expressing their concern about the situation. It cannot be that depending on where an athlete trains or competes, he or she will be treated differently by anti-doping authorities.
