This summary paper highlights the experiences and priorities of the roundtable participants from the Tasmania roundtables held on 19 and 21 March 2024 in Launceston and Hobart. The insights presented in this summary paper aim to guide both the policy and legislative landscape to accurately support the strategic trade and investment priorities of all levels of government and industry. 𝘌𝘹𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘯𝘦𝘸𝘴! Three senior researchers from the Plant Production Systems Group will receive funding from the 𝐍𝐋-𝐂𝐆𝐈𝐀𝐑 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 to work on challenges for global food security. Katrien Descheemaeker will work on advancing scientific methods and approaches towards stronger integration of different disciplines and more effective engagement of societal stakeholders. As a result, 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐢-𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 in sub-Saharan Africa will progress towards several Sustainable Development Goals. To achieve this, the Senior Expert will develop methods for considering farm labour dynamics and research approaches for more equitable impact. Through this assignment, locally-adapted innovations and development pathways will be designed together with farmers and other actors in the value chain. Moreover, the Senior Expert will contribute to knowledge and capacity sharing through a community of practice on systems science. Jens Andersson will work on developing an ‘𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲-𝐚𝐭-𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞’ approach for technology-scaling projects. Building on local farming system assessments, it co-designs tools that can be simultaneously used to: (1) digitally record at scale how smallholder farmers manage their fields, and; (2) instantly use this data to provide tailored recommendations for those fields. Scientists, extensionists and others can deploy the tools to collect data on, input use, yields, and (the impact of) technology uptake. The tools contribute to AgWise – the Excellence in Agronomy data-analytics framework for developing tailored agronomic recommendations – and will be used in Tanzania, the Chinyanja triangle (Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique) and Kenya. Marieke Sassen will lead work investigating the potential for achieving yield and biodiversity objectives in 𝐜𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 based on good agricultural practices, the influence of context (agroclimatic and ecological, socio-economic, institutional) on this potential, how to measure impacts of different practices on biodiversity (indicators and tools) efficiently, and finally, develop practical and useable guidance material for stakeholders in the coffee and cocoa sectors.

We’re proud to share that our chairholder, Prof. Spencer M., has been awarded the NL-CGIAR Senior Expert funding to advance food system transformation efforts through the innovative lens of social network sciences. With a focus on West and Central African food systems, Prof. Moore’s work emphasizes that sustainable food security isn’t just about introducing new technologies or crops - it’s about fostering meaningful, community-centered change. Through this project, Prof. Moore will collaborate with colleagues at CGIAR and in the Netherlands to develop a simulation tool aimed at evaluating various intervention strategies. This approach places health equity and social justice at the heart of food systems transformation, ensuring that new practices are not only effective but also socially relevant and inclusive for the communities they serve. We look forward to seeing the impact of this project and the strides it will make toward building resilient, equitable food systems for all.

Super proud on Wageningen Environmental Research’s Catharien Terwisscha van Scheltinga to be selected as one of the Senior Experts of the CGIAR. Catharien will be providing her expertise on #water & #food systems to the CGIAR’s Asian Mega-Deltas initiative for the next 4 years. 👩💻 Asia hosts over 50% of the world’s population, mostly in urbanised delta’s, which also offer fertile ground for a large share of the world’s food production. 💧 Wordwide, water and food systems are under pressure: climatic changes, urbanisation and intensive growth along with unsustainable production pose huge risks on water and food security in the Asian Mega-Deltas. 📰 The NWO (Dutch Research Council) Senior Expert Programme II (SEPII) has provided funding for 22 senior researchers from Dutch research institutions have been awarded funding by NWO through the NL-CGIAR Senior Expert Programme II (SEPII). These experts will collaborate with CGIAR on research focused on a wide variety of food system transformation topics, addressing critical issues such as improving food security in regions facing prolonged crises and analyzing the potential of underutilized crops. 🌱 This program is part of the ongoing partnership between the Dutch government and CGIAR.
