Are you passionate about the transformative power of enterprise and entrepreneurship education? Do you believe in the potential of these approaches to change lives? If so, I want to engage you with some ground-breaking insights from our latest paper which has just been published in the MDPI Journal of Education Sciences. The paper explores Entrepreneurship Education Programmes (EEPs) offered by UK universities assessing their structure and impact. The study is unique in its application of publicly available data to assess these features nationally. The paper highlights several interesting features of these programmes: 1. Despite a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship, there's a surprising scarcity of specialised modules within EEPs. 2. EEP students report lower satisfaction levels when compared to their peers studying for business degrees. 3. Anticipated higher continuation rates in EEPs remain elusive. 4. EEP graduates boast commendable employability rates, though they often face lower initial earnings. I've been waiting for someone to ask why an entrepreneurship educator is so interested in the future of universities. Finally, someone did! Here's what I explained: Exposing every student to entrepreneurship isn't a big enough goal. We have to change universities. Entrepreneurship education and its pedagogies are pilots for the future of university education. Why do universities so frequently showcase their entrepreneurship centres in recruitment materials? Because it's the most future-oriented part of the university. In the future, all education will look like entrepreneurship education today. Here’s why: 🔹 Active Learning: Entrepreneurship education is hands-on and experiential. It moves beyond passive learning to engage students in real-world problem-solving, project-based learning, and practical applications. Future university education will adopt this active learning approach, making learning more dynamic and impactful. 🔹 Interdisciplinary Approach: Entrepreneurship education integrates various disciplines, encouraging students to draw connections across fields. This holistic perspective is crucial for innovation and will be central to future education, breaking down silos and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. 🔹 Real-World Relevance: Entrepreneurship programs often involve partnerships with industry, providing students with direct exposure to market needs and challenges. This real-world relevance ensures that learning is applicable and valuable, a trend that will become the norm in university education. 🔹 Adaptability and Resilience: The entrepreneurial mindset focuses on adaptability, resilience, and problem-solving in the face of uncertainty. These competencies are essential for navigating the rapidly changing landscape of the future, and education will increasingly focus on developing these skills. 🔹 Innovation and Creativity: Entrepreneurship centres are hotbeds of innovation and creativity, encouraging students to think outside the box and develop novel solutions. Future education will prioritise creativity and innovation, equipping students with the skills to thrive in a constantly evolving world. 🔹 Network and Community Building: Entrepreneurship education emphasises building networks and communities, connecting students with mentors, peers, and industry professionals. This network-centric approach will foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment for future education. By embracing these elements, future university education will be more engaging, relevant, and effective in preparing students for future challenges and opportunities. MOVING FORWARD

There is now consensus that entrepreneurial skills can be learned and entrepreneurship can be taught. However, previous research argues that a skills gap among #entrepreneurship educators, primarily related to their subject knowledge and pedagogical toolbox, impedes the effective implementation of the subject. In our recent publication, Robert Newbery and I explore the specific challenges entrepreneurship educators experience in teaching the new subject in Higher Education. And yes, while they would appreciate more professional development, results of this study identified academic managers’ (deans, head of departments) lack of understanding of entrepreneurship education and their subsequent lack of active support for its implementation as a substantial factor limiting the practice of entrepreneurship educators in Higher Education. While macro-contextual factors and institutional context are now recognised as critical factors impacting entrepreneurial activity, this study contributes new insights into the role and impact of academic managers as a contextual factor influencing educators' effective implementation of entrepreneurship education. https://lnkd.in/d56bxXfN

The Misconception of Entrepreneurship Education in Nigerian Higher Institutions. The Nigerian government's initiative to incorporate entrepreneurship into higher education curricula aimed to foster a culture of innovation and self-sufficiency among graduates. However, the reality is that this approach has fallen short of its intended goals. The "Copy and Paste" Syndrome. Entrepreneurship lectures have become mere theoretical exercises, where students focus on memorizing and regurgitating concepts rather than internalizing the entrepreneurial spirit. This "copy and paste" approach neglects the essential skills required for successful entrepreneurship, such as: 1. Critical thinking and problem-solving. 2. Creativity and innovation. 3. Risk management and adaptability. 4. Leadership and Teamwork. 5. Resilience and perseverance. Lack of Entrepreneurial Mindset. The curriculum's failure to instill an entrepreneurial mindset has resulted in graduates who: 1. Lack confidence in launching their own businesses. 2. Struggle to identify and capitalize on opportunities. 3. Fail to innovate and differentiate themselves. 4. Are unprepared for the challenges of entrepreneurship. Statistics: A Reflection of the Reality, The numbers are telling: 1. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), only 15% of Nigerian graduates start their own businesses. 2. A survey by the Nigerian Youth Chamber of Commerce (NYCC) revealed that 70% of young entrepreneurs fail within the first two years. 3. The World Bank's Doing Business Report ranks Nigeria 131 out of 190 economies in terms of ease of doing business. Reasons for the Failure: Several factors contribute to the failure of entrepreneurship education in Nigerian higher institutions: 1. Theoretical emphasis: Overemphasis on theoretical concepts rather than practical application. 2. Lack of experiential learning: Insufficient opportunities for hands-on experience and experimentation. 3. Inadequate resources: Limited access to funding, mentorship, and networking opportunities. 4. Unprepared educators: Lecturers may not possess the necessary entrepreneurial experience or expertise. The Way Forward: BISA is here to bridge the gap between entrepreneurship education and real-world success: SELNY INITIATIVE’s - - BUSINESS INTELLIGENT STUDENTS ASSOCIATION (BISA) is launching out in all tertiary institutions for: 1. Practical application. 2. Mentorship programs. 3. Incubation centers. 4. Curriculum reform. 5. Industry partnerships. By addressing these challenges and reorienting entrepreneurship education, Nigeria can cultivate a new generation of confident, innovative, and successful entrepreneurs. My latest in Forbes covers the urgent need to expand entrepreneurship curricula in arts programs to help students diversify their skills and prepare for the disruptive and chaotic labor market. 🎭 Artists face a paradoxical challenge: pursuing further education in the arts often leads to financial fragility rather than flourishing careers. Yet, a glimmer of hope shines through for those who blend their artistic pursuits with business acumen. My research in the Journal of Cultural Economics and Artivate, alongside Jonathan Kuuskoski from the University of Michigan, reveals an encouraging trend: artists incorporating business courses into their studies not only navigate the market more effectively but also mitigate the earnings penalty typically associated with arts degrees. 🔍 The Earnings Gap and Entrepreneurship Education We find that fine arts graduates earn 8.7% less than their peers across different fields. However, the addition of a business degree narrows this gap by half, highlighting the transformative power of entrepreneurship education for artists. Despite the slow adoption of such training due to curriculum constraints, those few who receive it demonstrate significantly better labor market outcomes. 🚀 Entrepreneurship = A Necessity, Not an Option "The biggest barrier may not be cultural... There isn’t much space in most degree programs to add more coursework," explains Kuuskoski, stressing the importance of innovatively integrating entrepreneurship into arts curricula. This approach is not about diminishing the value of liberal arts or core requirements but about enriching the educational journey with essential market navigation tools. The onus falls on institutions to pave the way for a new era where art and entrepreneurship intersect seamlessly. As we advocate for a curriculum that mirrors the realities of the contemporary labor market, we empower artists to not just survive, but thrive. The latest study titled "The Role of Higher Education Institutions in Promoting Innovativeness and Passion towards Entrepreneurship among Students – A Meta-Analytic Review" offers pivotal insights into how colleges and universities can cultivate entrepreneurial spirit and innovation. Key Takeaways: 1. Significant Influence: HEIs play a crucial role in shaping entrepreneurial skills and mindset, with a robust correlation (rc=0.579) found between HEI components like mentorship programs, innovation labs, and more, directly boosting students' innovativeness and passion for entrepreneurship. 2. Institutional Environment: The study underscores the substantial impact of a supportive institutional environment (e.g. mentorship programs, innovation labs, entrepreneurial clubs, risk-taking culture, entrepreneurship curriculum, and industry connections) on fostering students' entrepreneurial passion, leading to enhanced innovativeness and successful entrepreneurial outcomes. 3. Train the Trainer: Launch comprehensive programs aimed at equipping educators with the latest entrepreneurial teaching methods and curricula. 4. Student Engagement: Increase student participation in entrepreneurial activities via competitions, technology platforms, incubators, and collaborations with local enterprises, enriching their practical experience and networking opportunities. 5. Monitoring & Evaluation: Implement robust mechanisms to assess and continually refine the effectiveness of entrepreneurship education based on the latest trends and feedback. By adopting these strategies, Indian HEIs can significantly boost entrepreneurial intent and arm students with the necessary skills to thrive in the global marketplace. Are we missing the mark on fostering entrepreneurial ambition❓ The University of Auckland’s 2023 GUESSS Survey reveals both progress and challenges in cultivating student entrepreneurship. With responses from over 226,000 students across 57 countries, the survey compares our student's entrepreneurial ambition globally. 👉 Key findings ✅ Only 6.2% of students intend to start their careers as entrepreneurs, compared to the global average of 15.7%. ✅Entrepreneurship education is underutilised—79.9% of students haven’t taken a single course, far above the global average of 58.8%. ✅A persistent gender gap shows female students’ entrepreneurial aspirations lagging behind their male peers, reflecting a global trend. These results highlight a critical need to embed entrepreneurship more deeply into our curriculum and to foster an ecosystem where entrepreneurial thinking thrives—not just for startups but across all sectors. New Zealand’s future depends on innovation and entrepreneurial thinking at every level of society. 🛠 The Path Forward At the University of Auckland, efforts are underway to close this gap. The Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) leads initiatives like embedding entrepreneurial competencies into existing courses and fostering collaboration with high schools and industry partners. But we need to do more. ✅Expanded access to entrepreneurship education. ✅Stronger support systems for nascent entrepreneurs. ✅A culture shift that positions entrepreneurship as a viable and rewarding career path.
