Minimizing external distractions at work Distractions are everywhere, especially if you are a physician. As I recently shared about managing our internal distractions, external distractions are more unpredictable. Thankfully, there are ways we can minimize those distractions and improve our efficiency. 1. Electronic devices – 📴 turn off the notifications on your phones and emails. Schedule certain time blocks during the day to check them. If it is something urgent, they will find you somehow. 2. People – 💥 give your staff clear and specific protocols so that they know when it is appropriate or absolutely necessary to interrupt you. 💥 If you are in the outpatient setting, closing the office door means do not walk in. 💥 If you are in a setting without a private room, wearing headphones (the ones big enough for others to see from far away) will also give others the “warning sign” to think twice before interrupting. 3. Environment –💡 work in a quiet place. If you work in a place with non-stop action, such as the emergency department, find a relatively isolated corner. 💡 Some soft music may help with your focus. 💡 Keep your desk clean – minimize the physical clutter 🛎️ Small changes may help you in big ways. #minimizedistractions #avoidinterruptions #standardprotocols #lifecoaching #physiciancoaching #enjoylife #enjoymedicine
