Rethinking Recruitment: On-Campus vs. Off-Campus Hiring Practices Companies visiting colleges offer attractive packages—whether it’s 8 LPA, 9 LPA, 13 LPA, or more—and hire students based on a virtual interview. These interviews often cover basic engineering questions that many students can answer. It seems the primary filter is the first round, be it an aptitude test or another preliminary assessment. Why, then, do these companies not adopt the same approach for off-campus hiring? Off-campus candidates face stringent eligibility criteria, such as experience and proficiency in numerous technologies, yet the offered packages are significantly lower, often insufficient for a comfortable living. It’s time for a change. Either increase the packages for off-campus hires or standardize the eligibility criteria across both on-campus and off-campus hiring processes. I got interview calls from Apple, Amazon, Google, and 3 other MNCs Here is how I created my resume👇🏻 ➤ Highlighted relevant experience: I emphasized my internship experience, focusing on quantifiable achievements like increasing performance and reducing costs. ➤ Included recognitions and projects: I added my projects along with my recognitions and awards. ➤ Used action words: I used bullet points and added strong action verbs (e.g. "developed," "led") I took this 1 extra step to make it ATS-friendly ✔️ I tailored my resume based on each role, adding the exact keywords from the JD and later using ATS scanners to check my resume score. I aimed for a score above 70 but I didn’t fully depend on this metric. I also tested my resume manually, spending more than 2 hours on 1 resume. But you don’t have to go through so much of hassle. My resume used for On-Campus didn't work for Off-Campus Facing the possibility that my CGPA might not land me an on-campus job, I started applying off-campus in September 2023. Despite my best efforts and even getting referrals, I faced constant rejections. #QuickTips Here’s what I learned about what off-campus employers are really looking for: • Value of Impact: It’s more about the difference you made or the improvements you brought, not just the tech stack you used. • Resume Format Matters: My shift from a Latex to a Google Doc resume made it more compatible with Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), greatly increasing my chances. A non-ATS-friendly resume often leads to automatic rejection. ( It might work in reverse for you..so you do you!!) • Be Brief: Keeping project and job descriptions to three lines max makes your resume clearer and more to the point. • Use Numbers: Showing your achievements with figures, like “Solved problem B with solution A, boosting efficiency by C%,” really stands out. Making these changes helped me understand better how to appeal to off-campus employers and I hope these insights can help others too.
