I'm thrilled to share that my latest article, co-authored with Dr. Hossein Hamidifar and Sajad Khodambashi Emami, has been published in the Hydrology journal (Impact Factor: 3.1, CiteScore: 4.9, Q1 in “Earth-Surface Processes”). Title: A Review on Storage Process Models for Improving Water Quality Modeling in Rivers In this review, we explore the complex interactions in river systems that affect water quality, especially focusing on the crucial roles of storage and hyporheic processes. Understanding these storage zones provides valuable insights into solute transport dynamics, nutrient cycling, and pollutant degradation. Our work reviews the progress of mathematical models, like the Transient Storage Model (TSM) and Multirate Mass Transport (MRMT) model, which significantly improve our ability to capture storage dynamics. However, we also highlight the limitations of widely used models such as the Advection-Dispersion Equation (ADE) in environments with substantial hyporheic exchange. Key Objectives of Our Review: 1- Summarize key physical and chemical processes impacting solute transport in rivers, with a focus on storage mechanisms. 2- Review and compare mathematical models simulating solute transport. 3- Identify research gaps in understanding storage contributions to ecosystem health and suggest future directions. Pushing the Boundaries of Desalination Scientists hunt for water on Mars because it makes life possible. Inspired by her professor commenting on the ground-breaking potential of a system that turns brine (high salt concentration water) into something useful, Tayia Oddonetto set out on a quest. The result: the award winning salt-free electrodialysis methansis (SF-EDM), which recovers 93% freshwater from brine. #ReverseOsmosis (#RO) manages only 85%. Next, SF-EDM reduces the pollution caused by the disposal of RO’s residual brine. Such discharge via deep well injection, evaporation ponds, and land disposal contaminate groundwater and soil. High recovery means it can treat industrial wastewater. And SF-EDM costs 80% of conventional methods. Ivonne Santiago, Oddonetto’s doctoral advisor at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) believes the research can help water conservation by cutting utility bills. SF-EDM secured funding and first place at the Perfect Pitch Competition of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Research Center. Practical tests are underway in association with US Bureau of Reclamation and National Alliance for Water Innovation, among others. Green is beautiful... and useful! Interesting results come from our testing of the mock-ups at the #Façade System Interaction Lab in Institute for Renewable Energy – Eurac Research. From August 2022 until now, the lab was used to compare different façade solutions. In particular, it was used to analyse #greenfaçade behaviour in south and east orientations. In the magazine Kitting of IBO - Austrian Institute for Building and Ecology we preview some of the results in article by Martino Gubert, Eurac Research and Elisabeth Leitner, GRÜNSTATTGRAU. Eurac Research researchers are analysing further the data. They are evaluating the impact of green #ventilated facades compared to other types of #cladding. Congratulations to Matthew Hanson Dumont and co-authors Zeb Etheridge and Rich McDowell on the publication of their paper on Determining the likelihood and cost of detecting reductions of nitrate‑nitrogen concentrations in groundwater across New Zealand in Science of the Total Environment (https://lnkd.in/gS3pfHNK) 👏 The paper summarises some of the key findings of our work on the two-year Monitoring Freshwater Improvements programme, funded by Our Land and Water and part of the National Science Challenge. The aim of the programme was to investigate how monitoring programmes can be designed to establish relationships between improvements actions and their effect; actions are being taken to improve freshwater quality, but how do we know if these actions are successful? Main takeaways from the paper include: - Both the groundwater lag (the time it takes water to flow through the system) and the noise (the unexplained variation in NO3-N measurements) make it more difficult to confidently detect whether groundwater quality is improving due to national and regional policy and rules and on-the-ground actions. - Excluding either groundwater lag times or the impact of noise will significantly overestimate our ability to detect changes and can set unrealistic stakeholder expectations. The current monitoring network, which was predominantly designed for aquifer characterization, is not suitable for detecting NO3-N reductions of the magnitude and at the rates which are likely to be implemented.  - Policy-relevant changes will likely only be detected by 40% of New Zealand’s network after 30 years. - Confidently detecting NO3-N reductions is a difficult task and will often require bespoke monitoring networks integrating surface and groundwater monitoring. - These new networks will require a significant increase in funding (100-300% increase) For more information on the Our Land and Water programme, see our website https://lnkd.in/gSuKSCTd) and the official website (https://lnkd.in/gezQk34), where you can find all the incredible work that the wider team have put out throughout the challenge.

I’m happy to share our recent publication, “Analyses of groundwater level in a data-scarce region based on assessed precipitation products and machine learning” in Groundwater for Sustainable Development. Our research features: - A thorough analysis to identity the most reliable precipitation data products. - The use of machine learning to estimate groundwater levels and variability. - A promising approach to fill gaps in groundwater data. - A useful tool for groundwater research in data-scarce regions. Giadom delivered an engaging presentation on Niger Delta remediation, highlighting challenges and prospects for environmental restoration. Dr. Giadom emphasized the urgency of addressing oil spillage, pollution, and ecosystem degradation in the Niger Delta. He outlined environmentally friendly remediation strategies, including bioremediation, phytoremediation, and natural attenuation. Professors S.A. Olatunji and Gabriel O. Adeyemi offered insightful observations, praising the paper's comprehensive approach. They stressed the importance of considering human and environmental impacts, emphasizing the need for sustainable remediation methods. The audience, comprising professors, doctors, and students, actively engaged with Dr. Giadom's research through thought-provoking questions. Clarification was sought on challenges, prospects, and the effectiveness of proposed remediation techniques.
