We've got a new resource for you!! The Sustainable Urban Design Handbook (https://lnkd.in/gy8Ys-3v) is organized around the Sustainable Urban Design Framework (see image and links below). This framework takes more than 50 urban design elements and organizes them based on five outcome goals and four scales (also see below). Read this horizontally and you can see all of the physical urban design elements that need to be in place to get the outcomes you want. Read it vertically and you can see all of the questions you should be asking yourself if you have a project at a certain scale. I just completed a great AIA course on The future of mobility: Sustainable, Human-Centered Urban Design. A key resource shared during the course was *The Sustainable Urban Design Handbook*, which provides an incredible framework for designing cities that prioritize sustainability and human well-being. The handbook organizes over 50 elements of sustainable urban design into five key areas—Energy Use & Greenhouse Gas, Water, Ecology & Habitat, Energy Use & Production, and Equity & Health—across four project scales: Region & City, District & Neighborhood, Block & Street, and Project & Parcel. This graphically rich and accessible resource compares typical practices with recommended approaches, offering clear guidelines to inform urban design decisions at every scale. This is a great resource for architects, planners, and anyone invested in creating sustainable urban environments.

Rethinking the Grid in Urban Design for Sustainable Growth - I’ve recently been inspired by Leslie Martin’s “The Grid as Generator,” which offers a fresh perspective on the role of grids in urban planning. While grids are sometimes seen as rigid and limiting, Martin argues they can actually serve as flexible frameworks that support organic growth within a structured system. Examples like Manhattan’s grid show how thoughtful, adaptable planning can accommodate high density and dynamic city life without compromising character.
