Going Beyond: Lohmann and Circular Valley's Journey Towards Circular Excellence Yesterday was a special day at the Lohmann headquarters in Neuwied: Dr. Günter Poppen from renowned Circular Valley in Wuppertal visited us to discuss sustainable business strategies and the future of circular economy. Together, we explored ways to further advance the industry. In addition to engaging discussions on our corporate strategy "BEYOND Sustainability”, the hurdles and opportunities of ESG legislation and the specifics of our industry, we also had the opportunity to showcase our TwinMelt (see picture) facility, a testament to our commitment to innovative and eco-friendly technologies. “These partnerships, innovation networks and technologies are crucial for Lohmann as we want to actively shape a sustainable future in the field of adhesive tapes”, explains Katharina Candia Avendaño, Global Head of Sustainability at Lohmann. “In recent years, we have laid the groundwork for our environmental commitment in the key areas of defossilization, sustainable resources, and product innovation. Our approach includes executing a defossilization roadmap to reduce emissions, enhancing sustainability across operations and investing in sustainable product solutions. 🌟 Show Highlights 2022 🌟 The American Coatings Show 2022 was an impressive showcase for innovations and trends in the in the coatings industry. The event, which took place April 5th to April 7th in Indianapolis, brought together leading companies, experts and professionals from around the world to present and discuss the latest developments and solutions in the industry. A key theme of the show was sustainability, with numerous exhibitors showcasing their environmentally friendly and sustainable coating solutions. From water-based formulations to plant-based products, the American Coatings Show 2022 demonstrated the industry's growing commitment to environmentally friendly practices and products. The American Coatings Show 2022 also provided an excellent opportunity for networking and the exchange of ideas. Industry leaders, researchers and users had the opportunity to meet to share experiences, explore potential partnerships and help shape the future of the coatings industry. Overall, the American Coatings Show 2022 was a resounding success and demonstrated that the coatings industry continues its path to innovation, sustainability and growth. I am planning to attend at the glasstec conference – The knowledge of the glass future. A first-class, cross-industry lecture program throughout the event with contributions from leading experts. Theory and practice are brought together in a concentrated form. At this top-class conference for the glass industry, solutions to current challenges will be presented and discussed by experts. The main focus of the glasstec – International Trade Fair conference is on the circular economy, digital technologies and decarbonization. Visitors can find out about the latest developments and trends in the daily sessions on glass production, glass processing and finishing, as well as glass products and applications. The glasstec conference is the roof for several events under it. I think the Florida Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (FLSCC) sustainability summit has ruined conferences for me. There were amazing brand founders and chemists from all over the country, a 4am SpaceX rocket launch, AND I had the chance to wear a dress from my friend Kellie Gerardi's yet-to-be-released space themed clothing line. 💫 But more than that, it felt like a truly engaging environment to have honest conversations about sustainability. A few takeaways from my panel and others: ⭐ We are in the midst of an evolution of the formal constructs around making sustainability claims. Understanding these constructs - and translating them to product development - is critical for long-term success. ⭐ To truly assess environmental impact, we must focus on the manufacturing process and the waste created in its upstream and downstream path. ⭐ While customers may ask for certifications, they are an imperfect mechanism and their utility is reflected in the robustness of their process. ⭐ Don't expect customers to pay a premium for sustainable products; focus on cost competitiveness (h/t Matthew Perkins of Macro Oceans for this one). 💁 It's true our approach to recycling is pretty ingenious! The event industry is mostly focused on single use solutions. Tons of materials are used to build a single stand at a fair or an event. They are designed for 2 or 3 days max. And then? All the materials go straight to the trash. Sounds pretty wasteful, right? That is where TRASH GALORE comes into play.
