China Trade Fair Diary - What is special about Chinese Factories in 3 Parts. This is a 3 Part series on my travel in China with Modern Living the furniture company I started 6 years ago with my wife. Visiting factories that make products you love is like peeping into the kitchen of a 5-star restaurant. It's exciting, sometimes traumatizing, and you learn all the time. I went to China asking myself what was so special about Chinese factories and whether Ugandan factories could ever reach that level. Part 1 - Systematization: "Those guys are so organized!" I visited around 10 factories over the 2 weeks I was there. I went with Hadijja, my wife (and the managing director of Modern Living ) and her head of production. At the fair, I told Hadjija to find the most high-end furniture manufacturer she could. She picked the one that manufactures furniture for 6-Star Hotels in Qatar. There was a queue at their booth. I schmoozed my way into a factory visit. They came to pick us up in a high-end van with leather seats that give you a back massage (more on this in part 3). I was expecting to see a high-tech factory with robots. Chinese factories have an aura, and the finishing on the products was indeed next level. What I saw was both disappointing and encouraging. They join wood with glue. They sand curved edges by hand, and they use sewing machines to stitch. In other words, there wasn't anything special in "what they were doing." All the magic was in the "how". All raw material was labeled and organized. Tasks were broken down into the smallest steps with dedicated teams. They had a few CNCs here and there for precision but nothing crazy. Quality control checks were integrated into every major milestone. Production overall though was man-led and manual. The list goes on and on, but in a big nutshell: They were extremely organized. It's disappointing because there is no silver bullet. "If only we had this machine" is flawed logic. Our factories don't have a "lack of capital" problem. They have a process problem. It's encouraging because it means that they aren't "that far off" in a way. "All those steps we already do with what we have. They have just found a way to make it extremely efficient and at scale" - Modern Living Head of Production. I came out fired up because it meant that, at least for our local market, we could compete. It means that Chinese factories are ahead, but for reasons, we can learn and recreate. Of course, there is more to this so kindly stay tuned for Part 2.

The Key to Success at the Canton Fair The Canton Fair, officially known as the China Import and Export Fair, is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious trade shows, attracting exhibitors and buyers from across the globe. Held twice a year in Guangzhou, China, it serves as a dynamic platform for businesses to connect, showcase their latest products, and establish valuable industry connections. To stand out at this massive event, companies must strategically position themselves, offer distinctive products, and rely on a skilled sales team to engage and build relationships with potential buyers. 1. A Prime Location In Canton Fair, where hundreds of thousands of visitors navigate countless aisles and booths, securing a good booth location can be critical. A prime location can mean the difference between heavy foot traffic. The best spots are usually those near main entrances, intersections, or areas with high visibility, such as near food courts or information booths. With high visibility, companies can attract a larger volume of potential clients who may miss a booth located in a low-traffic area. Many seasoned exhibitors even book their booths well in advance to ensure they secure these coveted spots. 2. Unique Products: Stand Out with Color, Fabric, and Design The Fair features an extensive range of products from various industries, so standing out can be a challenge. One way to differentiate is by offering unique products that captivate attendees’ attention. This can be achieved through innovative uses of color, distinctive fabric choices, and creative designs that align with or set future trends. For example, companies in the textile or apparel sectors might experiment with bold color schemes or sustainable, high-quality fabrics to meet the rising demand for eco-friendly and stylish options. A well-thought-out design that emphasizes functionality as well as aesthetic appeal also plays a crucial role. Unique products not only capture attention but also build a brand’s reputation, signaling creativity and a forward-thinking approach that can attract buyers looking for fresh, marketable items. 3.A Professional Sales Team Having professional sales team is essential at the Canton Fair, as they are the bridge between the company and potential clients. An effective sales team is knowledgeable, engaging, and able to quickly assess and cater to each buyer’s needs. They should be equipped with comprehensive product knowledge, fluency in multiple languages, and strong negotiation skills to foster trust and close deals. A professional sales team does more than simply answer questions; they create an experience for the buyer, providing insights into the brand’s value, discussing customization options, and even anticipating future product needs. Moreover, building rapport is key—exhibitors who establish a friendly, informative dialogue with buyers are more likely to leave a lasting impression that translates into future business relationships.

MommyLove OEM/ODM Factory arrived at the Canton Fair site on May 2nd and found that this year's Canton Fair had a large number of visitors. Since last year, the baby and child category has been separated from the household goods general category, which provides more convenient ways for customers to find precise suppliers. This year's Canton Fair new products of the baby bottle, water cup, and tableware categories are not very rich, and there are not many new factories, which I think is closely related to the global economic downturn. Because the current market is a market of existing quantities, not a market of increasing quantities. In the future, the traffic of B-end customers will also become more dispersed, which is a new challenge for professional factories engaged in branded custom processing. The cost of marketing is increasing, and the team's ability to learn, adapt, and integrate will also face a test. We recognize the changes in the market and constantly adjust our team to provide better products and services. Let's work together to contribute to the development of the global baby and child industry and shine together.

Fruitful ITM for Karl Mayer Group... At this year's ITM in Istanbul where the majority of visitors came from Turkey, the Karl Mayer Group once again demonstrated it is a reliable partner for its customers, especially in difficult times. In particular, the number of trade visitors from North Africa and Central Asia was lower than usual. Nevertheless, the Karl Mayer Group trade fair team was able to report successes. The positive outcome included numerous new contacts - 22% of the registered guests were first-time visitors - and an almost consistently high number of Turkish visitors as at ITM 2022. Above all, however, there was a high-quality professional exchange with dialogue partners, most of whom had specific concerns. "We had many in depth discussions, mostly about the difficult economic situation. Our customers are currently looking for ways to reduce their costs and increase the efficiency of their production. The solutions we presented in the areas of machine technology, digital solutions, service and textile innovations gave our customers a lot of valuable insight for their business. It is also relevant to note that with the quick changing requirements of retailers, machine flexibility is becoming as important as speed," says Toros Greenhalgh, Managing Director of the Turkish subsidiary of the Karl Mayer Group, which has only started local operations this year.
