The Finnish IMO delegation participated in International Maritime Organization's Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communications and Search and Rescue during 4th-13th June in London. The NCSR Sub-Committee finalized the revised requirements for Pilot Transfer Arrangements that improve the safety of not only pilots, but all persons using the arrangements. The Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communications and Search and Rescue deals with a wide range of technical and operational matters related to SOLAS Chapters IV and V. This includes: 🔹 safety of navigation 🔹 various communication systems that enable communication between ships and shore stations 🔹 routeing measures and ship reporting systems 🔹 search and rescue Finland considers that the regulatory development of especially communication systems in the maritime domain provides essential components to facilitate development of e-navigation services and MASS (Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships). Like disco and bell bottoms, supersonic aircraft are in style again! Check out this cold take on supersonic aircraft from famed aviator Charles Lindbergh. In a 1972 NYT opinion piece, he argues for banning supersonic operations over the US. Replace "Concorde" with "Overture" and the arguments ring true today. "A supersonic transport is fast, but it is costly, noisy, a polluter, and its range is relatively short... If the decision were based solely on airline economy and the quality of human environment, I think supersonic transports would not be placed in operation in the foreseeable future... Even more basic is the issue of whether commercial and political interests make it impossible for modern man to protect his own atmosphere and senses. The supersonic transport symbolizes this issue. Our response to its challenge will indicate our future.
