🏁 And we’re off! SWAIS2C’s on-ice season is officially underway, with the first of the team departing Scott Base on their extreme polar road trip – 15 days across the Ross Ice Shelf in a convoy of Antarctica New Zealand PistenBully polar vehicles. 🛷They’re towing sleds laden with fuel, equipment, and provisions to sustain our deep-field research camp for the approximately 8-week season. The traverse team of six are making great time, some high winds along the way – check out these pics from mechanic Joe McDougal direct from the ice shelf. 🛩️Once they complete their 1128 km journey and arrive at KIS3 they’ll create a runway on the ice, so the drillers and science team can fly into the camp. We can’t wait to get to camp and get cracking with our ambitious mission to obtain a deep geological record from the seafloor below the ice and ocean.
