"This new, immersive visualization produced on a #NASA supercomputer represents a scenario where a camera — a stand-in for a daring astronaut — enters the event horizon, sealing its fate. ... A flat, swirling cloud of hot, glowing gas called an accretion disk surrounds the black hole and serves as a visual reference during the fall. So do glowing structures called photon rings, which form closer to the black hole from light that has orbited it one or more times. This captivating animation is a result of an extraordinary collaboration between the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The Pillars of Creation, located 6,500 light-years away in the Eagle Nebula, have fascinated us since Hubble first captured their image in 1995. Now, with combined efforts from Hubble and JWST, these star-forming clouds are brought to life in remarkable detail. Led by astrophysicist Anna McLeod, this visualization is based on real observational data. The video highlights the contrasting views from Hubble and JWST: Hubble’s visible light images show slightly blurry clouds with hints of bright yellow ionized gas, while JWST’s infrared capabilities reveal sharp details, hidden newborn stars, and the ability to see through cosmic dust. JWST’s advanced technology provides deeper insights into star formation, showing how young stars’ winds reshape the pillars.
